Wearing thin

I have no real objection about this type of commercial thrust. If I were CEO, I would be happy to have successfully herded electrical contractors into a pen, charge them for the privilege, and then set about bombarding them with goodies. Yes, no problem at all, excellent move! However, it is beginning to wear a bit thin with me. I was proud to have joined NICEIC as an approved contractor over 35 years ago. I failed to get in first time. Second time, success, which came with a bit of a week-day morning sore head after celebrating the event. Back then, NICEIC was an austere body with strict rules. Back then you lost a nights sleep worrying about the annual visit by the inspecting engineer. Back then you were proud to belong to such a worthy organization!

But now, 35 years on, whilst I remain happy to accept that NICEIC are fully signed up to properly assessing and promoting technical competence, this kind of promotion is starting to wear thin!

  • Being a member of NICEIC or any other CPS (Competent Person Scheme) does not hold the same quality or prestige as it once did say 20 years ago.  Their annual checks do not asses enough of the installs that the member has done and sometimes they only pay lip service to BS7671 Regulation 134.1.1 and 510.3.  There is plenty evidence out there on the internet showing pictures of poor installs and some are downright dangerous by NICEIC members (other CPS providers are available for the same critique).

Another salient point is redress for poor work done a CPS member.  If another Electrician or Trades person sees poor work or dangerous work there is no clear way to get this reported to the NICEIC for inspection and rectification in an expedient manner.  It is also highly questionable if the NICEIC than seek a meeting with the original installer about getting additional training so they do not repeat the same install mistakes.  If CPS's are meant to be the gatekeepers then they need to do more to make sure the installs are safe and compliant.
