Wearing thin

I have no real objection about this type of commercial thrust. If I were CEO, I would be happy to have successfully herded electrical contractors into a pen, charge them for the privilege, and then set about bombarding them with goodies. Yes, no problem at all, excellent move! However, it is beginning to wear a bit thin with me. I was proud to have joined NICEIC as an approved contractor over 35 years ago. I failed to get in first time. Second time, success, which came with a bit of a week-day morning sore head after celebrating the event. Back then, NICEIC was an austere body with strict rules. Back then you lost a nights sleep worrying about the annual visit by the inspecting engineer. Back then you were proud to belong to such a worthy organization!

But now, 35 years on, whilst I remain happy to accept that NICEIC are fully signed up to properly assessing and promoting technical competence, this kind of promotion is starting to wear thin!

  • It's just a sales and marketing company now. Bugeer all to do with enhanced electrical safety for the end user/consumer any longer. Just look at how many arms have sprouted - 'Certsure? Who are they? What do they do? Then we get to the Electrical Safety Council? Again, related to NIC, what do they do? No thanks.

I wonder how many of the assessors for NICEIC or Napit are DBS  (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked?  Formerly known as CRB checks, these are now processed exclusively by the DBS. Key updates as of 2025-2026 include digital ID verification

As a question how often does an NIC assessor go to a school and check the work that has been carried out?

  •  NIC assessor go to a school

Surely on a short visit they'd be escorted, either by the person they are assessing or a member of staff ? The only situation that is a potential problem is folk of unknown history being left unsupervised with opportunity to access to 'vulnerable persons' - using that form of words as the situation is more general than schools and includes nursing homes, hospitals and many other locations.

Similar 'unknown adult' situations must arise when parents and other family members attend teacher evenings, Nativity plays and so on.

I'd expect folk actually working at such a location to be vetted, much as on other sites you'd need to pass security clearance

    Mike.

  • Thus the question I should of posed maybe should be

Are NICEIC/Napit assessors DBS checked every 3 to 5 years?

  • Thus the question I should of posed maybe should be

Are NICEIC/Napit assessors DBS checked every 3 to 5 years?

Why - as Mike suggested - since the schools etc. already are able to deal with unchecked people on the premises - why make a special case for assessors?

  • NAPIT assessors are DBS checked every three years.
