Coding and regs in force at time of installation

While we code to the current regulations we seem to make allowances usually a C3 for earlier installations.

for example Arc Fault Detection Device in a high risk residential building, if the building is 20 years old this makes sense, otherwise we would have to upgrade many properties.

how should we code if the building was wired recently when Arc Fault Detection Device is required .

Arc Fault Detection Devices were just picked as an example but could apply to any changed requirements where the installer has not met the regs at the time.

  • If something does not cause any immediate or potential danger, how does fixing it produce a significant enhancement of the safety of the installation?

I suspect because they're already equated the phrase "immediate danger" with C1 and "potential danger" with C2 - so maybe think in those terms rather than the usual English meanings of the words. I guesss we need a phase for "what's leftover, but still not entirely acceptable".

We'll never be free of all danger - there are gaps aplenty in both BS 7671 and appliance standards to allow all kinds of risks to remain even in totally compliant setups.
