New 18th Edition Amendment 4

As we are now all aware the new IET BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 18th edition is due in April.

The additions and alterations will be indicated by a side bar in the margin, however the other publications (Guidance Notes 1-8, On-Site Guide) don't follow this rule, should they?

I feel this would help electricians and lecturers like myself to identify relevant changes that are not always present in BS7671.

  • It's a nice idea, but I'm unsure of the practicalities. A change in BS 7671 usually means a definite change in meaning, whereas guidance might get an entire paragraph re-written just to try and make an explanation a bit clearer - and other very significant things might result in just a section disappearing altogether (leaving nothing to place change bars against, unless you go for the drafting practice of showing deleted text crossed out).

    So that would be two types of side bar; definitive change [e.g. brown/live] & improved clarity [blue/neutral];

    still leaving green and yellow for safety and bonding....
