To help improve the situation


The Scope MAY have to include not just schools, but nursery/day care, perhaps scout huts, cadet centres, etc.

Should EICR or Periodic Inspection and testing for schools be increased in frequency from 5 years to 3?

Should CPS assessors visit the schools more frequently to check on works carried out by their approved electricians?


As always please be polite and respectful in this purely academic debate.

    Note that 

    "75 per cent of school fires are the result of a malicious fire 

    .. nearly a third of all school fires start in school time"

    Predominantly this reads to me that is not about things like defective  electrical heating but more about CCTV, security and early detection. Be aware that the publication you link to was commissioned by the National Fire sprinklers Association, and tends to view the problem and possible solution though that lens.

    It also occurs to me - given how things were mis-used by kids when I were a lad - the that sprinklers themselves might become a risk of damage ... how long before the class clown figures out they can be triggered by hitting the glass vial with something...

    Hi Mike

    I do agree that there is a bias for sprinklers.  A lot of times when a study is done by an industry or industry association the outcome is normally biased to their industry and is normally geared to help generate sales first and improve things as a second.  Having said that I think that the IET forum as a community can help come up with some ideas to make things better and reduce schools fires which ultimately affects people's learning experience.

    As an example some CCTV systems can check for fires via infrared so this could be used as a secondary verification mechanism.  Thus the smoke/heat sensor is the first trigger in a zone and then the CCTV/infrared could be used as verification before fire and rescue are alerted

    Another much ado about nothing in particular published by a Body with a huge financial self interest. Not worthy of my attention to be honest.

    How many inspections and other measures  a year do you want? Would a full EICR conducted on an hourly basis satisfy the paranoia?
