Twin & Earth to moveable Junction Boxes and Mains voltage downlights.

I am currently commenting on a Pre-Fabricated Bathroom Pod design where the designer is specifying a junction box for final connection & testing of the pod with the pod being wired in LSZH Tw & E cable. Slack should be left on cables so that the junction box can be dropped through an access hatch for connection purposes with future access to the junction box post completion for testing and inspection.

I reject this design on the basis that Tw & E cabling is 'fixed wiring' and that in accordance with BS 7671 521.9.2 wiring should be undertaken using heavy duty flexible cables H07ZZ-F LSZH Flexible Mains and Control Cable - 1mm² to 630mm² in lieu of Tw & E, however the bathroom pod designer and the clients MEPH Technical Project Engineer are arguing against such wiring.

Can someone advise who is right or wrong.

  • If the cable is fixed in the sense that both ends are fastened to something the doesn't normally move and the cable itself isn't flexed in service, then T&E types are usually considered acceptable - indeed T&E was traditionally used for cooker connections, even if the cooker itself wasn't fixed as such and could be pulled out for spring cleaning etc. Fixed wiring cables are routinely not clipped but just left lying - e.g. in building voids above ceilings or below floors.
