BS 7671 Section 701 bathroom zones

Good afternoon.

Would anyone be able to advise, why BS 7671 does not define any zones around vanity units in bathrooms? Section 701 appears to clearly specify zones only in relation to baths and showers.

Additionally, would it be acceptable to install a 230V magnifying mirror light rated IP21 very close to the water tap on a vanity unit?

  • I don't think sinks/ vanity units are included in the zone system in bathrooms, just the bath and shower.

There is something about water protection in 522.3.

I would also say IP21 isnt good enough for bathrooms or kitchens.

  • We have lamps (with shaver sockets) above our wash-hand basins. I doubt that they have a high IP rating.

ETA: if the basin is adjacent to the bath or shower, at least part of it will be in zone 2.

  • Would anyone be able to advise, why BS 7671 does not define any zones around vanity units in bathrooms?

Presumably because the situation doesn't have quite the same risks (barefoot and immersed) - bathroom basins are possibly more similar to kitchen sinks or (less fashionable these days) basins in bedrooms or even outside taps. That's not to say that you're free to install anything you like there - the general requirements for all equipment to be suitable for its environment still apply - e.g. where splashes are to be expected (AD4 - see appendix 5) - IPx4 would usually be sensible.
