Bonding of Propane supply from Cylinders.

In a domestic TN-C-S installation, the housholder has had a gas hob installed. The supply is piped directly though the wall immediately behind the new hob outside to a changeover/ regulator connected to two 47kg propane cylinders which sit on the ground. The supply piping is all above ground. Is it necessary to bond the metallic supply piping and can anyone offer a simple explanation for a sceptical householder?

Thanks.

  • Is it sensible to export a PME earth to some exposed pipes and cylinders on the ground outside ?.
The risk to some-one changing a bottle is that the bottle, presumably on a rubber flexi-hose is not at the same voltage as the pipe and change-over valve that one might reasonably touch while the other hand is on the bottle?

The usual argument for bonding gas mains emerging from the ground is that they are at external earth potential and you dont want the house earth to be different  - I suspect this is not the case here. Actually if the hob is on a rubber hose as well, then the pipes and gas valves are fully floating.

Regs wise, if there is piping in and outside, you probably want it earthed rather than not, but the reason is not the usual one.
