The London Local Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people. All events are open to the public and most are free of charge.
The Local Network aims to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.
The schedule for the London Local Network lectures is as follows:

Generative AI and Quantum Computing - Future Challenges for Cyber Security The rapid evolution of technology has brought cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) to the forefront of global discourse. As more devices and systems connect to the internet, the threat landscape has grown significantly. At the same time, AI is revolutionizing the way we defend against cyber threats, offering new solutions but also presenting its own set of challenges. The intersection of AI and cybersecurity represents a critical point for both securing digital infrastructure and shaping the future of global tech. |
The M25 Junction 10 (A3) Project – the story behind the traffic cones The M25 junction 10 and A3 Wisley interchange is the busiest section of the M25, with over 300,000 vehicles travelling through it every day. Journeys that include commuters, businesses, those visiting local attractions and holidaymakers. The junction is located among some rare and beautiful habitats, including the heathland at Wisley and Ockham Commons, and implementation of this project has had to be carried out without major disruption to key arterial routes in a way that is sensitive to significant environmental concerns. |
Sellafield: Past, present and future In 1947, the Sellafield site opened with a mission to produce the radioactive material for Britain's nuclear deterrent. As time passed, pioneers went on to design and build the world's first commercial-sized atomic power station and led the development of the technology for recycling nuclear fuel so that both plutonium and uranium could be recovered, stored and reused safely. Still, the Sellafield site presents one of Europe's most significant environmental remediation challenges today. The lecture will cover Sellafield's history, its past role in nuclear power, its importance today, and how science, technology, and innovation (including robotics and artificial intelligence) are helping it meet its current challenges and achieve its vision for the future. |

Telecom Towers, Masts, and Poles One of the most clearly visible parts of the telecommunications industry is the many towers, masts, and poles which adorn roadsides, roofs and hilltops. Indeed, there is a plethora of such structures ranging from the most minor mobile phone cell site to the ubiquitous telegraph pole and the iconic BT Tower. From the days of the Armada, telecommunications towers have been used to ensure messages can be sent over many miles. Today, they play an essential role in the delivery to consumers of radio and television programmes, telephony, and broadband while also forming an important element of national telecommunication backbone networks. |
Transforming Healthcare through Design Methodologies for Additive Manufacturing The advent of new diagnostics and digital fabrication systems provides the opportunity to move to a more patient-centric healthcare provision. However, the cost of customisation is a major barrier for many applications. This presentation will explore how Additive Manufacturing and AI data processing tools can be utilised to build automated design-through-manufacture pipelines for patient specific devices. The body of work explored how input patient data fidelity impacted product outputs and examined potential scalable, viable, options for healthcare providers. |
