The London Local Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people. All events are open to the public and most are free of charge.
The Local Network aims to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

The M25 Junction 10 (A3) Project – the story behind the traffic cones The M25 junction 10 and A3 Wisley interchange is the busiest section of the M25, with over 300,000 vehicles travelling through it every day. Journeys that include commuters, businesses, those visiting local attractions and holidaymakers. The junction is located among some rare and beautiful habitats, including the heathland at Wisley and Ockham Commons, and implementation of this project has had to be carried out without major disruption to key arterial routes in a way that is sensitive to significant environmental concerns. |
Beyond the Lab - Accessible AI-Tools for Tracking and Analysing Animal Behaviour in Natural Environments Dr Fabian Plum, a Postdoctoral Researcher at Imperial College London whose focus lies in computer vision and deep learning for large-scale animal behavioural research will provide a general introduction to the use of deep neural networks in image recognition settings and focus on how to overcome data scarcity, using animal behavioural research as a prominent example. |

Railway Systems Integration – Dealing with Complexity Railway Systems Integration is a critical aspect of delivering functional, reliable railway systems. It involves not just the technical alignment of complex subsystems – such as signalling, rolling stock, and infrastructure – but also the incorporation of operational, maintenance, and organisational elements to ensure that the railway system operates effectively and meets its intended benefits. The paper examines five themes – responsibility, complexity, staged delivery, scope, and stakeholders – drawing insights from major infrastructure and upgrade programmes, such as the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension and Crossrail. |
Telecom Towers, Masts, and Poles One of the most clearly visible parts of the telecommunications industry is the many towers, masts, and poles which adorn roadsides, roofs and hilltops. Indeed, there is a plethora of such structures ranging from the most minor mobile phone cell site to the ubiquitous telegraph pole and the iconic BT Tower. From the days of the Armada, telecommunications towers have been used to ensure messages can be sent over many miles. Today, they play an essential role in the delivery to consumers of radio and television programmes, telephony, and broadband while also forming an important element of national telecommunication backbone networks. |
