The London Local Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people. All events are open to the public and most are free of charge.
The Local Network aims to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

The schedule for the London Local Network lectures is as follows:
- Central London Evening Lectures: 2nd Wednesday of each calendar month, at IET Savoy Place.
- Central London Friday Lectures: last Friday of each calendar month, at IET Savoy Place.
- Hammersmith Evening Lectures: 3rd Tuesday of each calendar month, at Novotel London West, Hammersmith.
- Harrow Evening Lectures: regular events at Harrow College.

The History of the Kempton Park Waterworks The Kempton Park Waterworks has been supplying central London with drinking water constantly since 1906. Until 1980, triple-expansion steam engines dominated the works including two of the largest steam engines ever built in the world. These engines similar in size and type to those onboard the RMS Titanic, pumped water during the Blitz and have starred any many films and TV productions. The talk will delve deeper into the operation and history of the waterworks, including an overview of how London gets it water. |
"Wind to Wheel": How does the wind drive an electric vehicle This talk investigates how the kinetic energy of the wind is converted to kinetic energy to drive an electric vehicle via a 2.5 MW wind turbine placed in the London Array through multiple convertors and step down and step up transformers to the electrical grid to charge an electric vehicle located in a home in central London. Why have weather forecasts improved? Technological developments have underpinned the increase in accuracy of weather forecasts. In particular, from the mid-1960s the use of increasingly sophisticated numerical models coupled with an enhanced availability of observations have led to modern five-day forecasts being as accurate as one-day forecasts 50 years ago. These developments will be discussed along with how numerical models are used to understand how the climate system works and how it might change in the future. |
