London

The London Local Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people. All events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

The Local Network aims to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

Upcoming Events

Net Zero versus the Data Centres

As a society we face the challenge of transitioning our energy system away from fossil fuels to a sustainable Net Zero system. Though daunting, we are developing technologies, systems and plans to achieve this across existing sectors including transport, industry and the built environment.

But all the while, a new form of energy demand was on the rise. Hidden in the commercial sector, nestled away in business parks, mysterious windowless buildings with no signage, slowly sucking up baseload.

Now with the meteoric introduction of AI applications, these Data Centres are outgrowing their humble beginnings. Massive scale up is underway to support ever more powerful AI, requiring vast Data Centre campuses, large enough to justify their own nuclear reactors.

Where does all this leave our plans for Net Zero?

Telecom Towers, Masts, and Poles

One of the most clearly visible parts of the telecommunications industry is the many towers, masts, and poles which adorn roadsides, roofs and hilltops. Indeed, there is a plethora of such structures ranging from the most minor mobile phone cell site to the ubiquitous telegraph pole and the iconic BT Tower.

From the days of the Armada, telecommunications towers have been used to ensure messages can be sent over many miles.  Today, they play an essential role in the delivery to consumers of radio and television programmes, telephony, and broadband while also forming an important element of national telecommunication backbone networks.

Engineering Circular Solutions - The Waste2Energy Anaerobic Digestion System for Biodegradable Waste Treatment and Energy Recovery

The management of biodegradable waste is a pressing global issue. In alignment with European circular economy goals and UK policy, efforts are accelerating to eliminate biodegradable waste from landfills by 2028, paving the way to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. However, small-scale waste generators—rural villages, agricultural and livestock farms, small towns, and industrial sites—face unique challenges in managing organic waste.

Current Anaerobic Digestion (AD) systems are primarily designed for large-scale operations, leaving a gap in solutions for smaller, more dispersed waste sources. From limited collection infrastructure and inconsistent separation practices to small waste volumes that render traditional composting economically unfeasible, addressing bio-waste requires innovative, localized solutions.

Industry leaders and leading companies will explore the importance and the place of the UK in Global Manufacturing, discuss Trends, Challenges and Opportunities and showcase some exciting Products and Technologies.

From Horns to Hearables - The Strange History of Audio Reproduction

In little more than a hundred years, we’ve gone from wax cylinders to streaming services, and brass horns to stereo earbuds. It’s been a journey that’s seen constant battles between manufacturers, recording studios and audiophiles, as they’ve grappled with technology, audio quality and convenience. In this talk, Nick looks at how our desire to listen to music has created a multi-million dollar industry which has created its own mythology about audio quality. It’s a history of surprising and often accidental development that has always been difficult to predict, but which is still trying to find new ways to make more money from our ears. Come and hear how we got to where we are today and where we may be going in the future.

Nuclear power supporting net zero by 2050?: Using cogeneration to maximise contribution of wind and solar

This talk describes how nuclear cogeneration (nuclear heat and electricity for diverse applications) can be used to enable wind and solar power to maximise their contribution, while preventing power cuts.
