Scotland South East

About us

The IET South East Scotland Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people.

We aim to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

Our events

All our events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

Visit the events page filtered by Scotland South East Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

SESAME - South East Scotland Afternoon Meetings and Events

The SESAME section of IET South East Scotland Network organises a series of daytime and early evening activities with both a social and technical theme.

Read blog posts by Jim Gaw (Treasurer of the SESAME committee)

As our name suggests we arrange events within the South East of Scotland with a focus on being both a social and technical group.

All our events and other activities are multi-disciplinary, addressing a wide range of current engineering and technology topics of interest to both specialist and generalist alike.

All our events are open to the public and are free.

Our events are either talks or technical visits.

Our talks, by an invited speaker, are held at either:-

Edinburgh Napier University Craiglockhart Campus at 2pm followed by refreshments.

Edinburgh Napier Merchiston Campus at 6pm with refreshments served at 5.30pm.

Registration is not usually necessary for talks but is helpful for us to manage the event.

Registration is essential for technical visits as attendee numbers are usually limited. Our visits are generally within an hour’s drive of Edinburgh and normally involve meeting locally for lunch followed by the visit. Visit attendees pay for their own lunch.

The confirmed events for our Spring 2026 programme are:

  • 3 February - Visit - Visit to National Museums of Scotland Technology Collection Centre
  • 4 March - Talk - The Story of Voyager 1 and 2 - Edinburgh Napier Craiglockhart Campus
  • 22 April - Visit - University of Edinburgh Library Digitisation Department
  • 20 May - Talk - The Physics of Divining - Edinburgh Napier Merchiston Campus
