Activities For Session 2023

Technical Talk: Ferroresonance in Power System

By: Zahin Syafiq

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) conducted a technical talk on the 27th of September 2023 on “Ferroresonance in Power System” to mark the third of a monthly Technical Talks series. Guests began arriving at 7.30 pm with an attendance of 30 people. Upon arrival, they were greeted promptly by members of the IET Network before taking their seats. The talk soon began at 7:45 pm where guest speaker, Ir. Dr. Ang Swee Peng discussed the onset of a ferroresonance phenomenon in power systems is commonly caused by the reconfiguration of a circuit into one consisting of capacitances in series interacting with transformers. This reconfiguration can result from switching operations during de-energization or the occurrence of a fault. Sustained ferroresonance, without immediate mitigation measures, can cause transformers to remain in a state of saturation, leading to excessive flux migrating to transformer tanks via internal accessories. The symptom of such an event can be unwanted humming noises, but the real threat is the potential overheating, which can result in premature aging and failures. The talk concluded at 9.00 pm with a Question and answer session where attendees asked various questions ranging from applications as well as design considerations.

The IET Brunei Network would like to thank the guest speaker,Ir. Dr. Ang Swee Peng as well as all the attendees for a great evening. The IET Brunei Network aims to host more events in hopes to provide a reliable platform for gaining valuable engineering and technology knowledge.

Technical Visit: Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub

By: Wafiy Anak Suhimi

On Friday morning, 25th August 2023, members from the Institution of Engineering and Technology – Universiti Teknologi Brunei on Campus (UTBOC) had the opportunity to a technical visit which took place at Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub (BAPSLH) in Kuala Belait Seria. A total of 22 members (combination of IET UTB and UBD members) took part in this technical visit.

Upon arrival, Mohammad Huzaimy welcomed the visiting group before proceeding to opening remarks from Hajah Fadhlina about the standard of procedure in BAPSLH and what BAPSLH entails. The agenda of this technical visit was to expose upcoming future engineers to the working field as well as valuable technical knowledge about equipment testing, maintenance, and all related processes from mechanical, instrument, command and control, and electrical.

Within the agenda of the technical visit, the group was then given an in-depth tour of BAPSLH’s working grounds and in addition to that gave some of the members hands on experience on how to isolate circuit breaker and even had the opportunity to wear a full protective gear called arc-flash suit, in the situation where there is risk of arching on the job.

The visit was concluded with the presentation of a token of appreciation from IET given by IET Main Committee Zainidi Bin Hj Abdul Hamid to HR Operations Manager, Jason Romero in appreciation for a well hosted and informative technical visit. It is hoped that the technical visit gives the members a better comprehension on what to anticipate in the working world.
