My name is Julian Goh and I am a recent chemical engineering graduate from Curtin University. Despite going through four years of university and hearing about the IET, it was only a month ago when I attended my first IET WA YP committee meeting in April. From there I volunteered to undergo a trial by fire which was to organise a day of Lifeskills workshops designed to engage and provide values to unsuccessful Leadership Program 2017 candidates. At the end of the meeting, I was given a succinct summary from Peta Blight of the rough steps I had to take to get everything together and from that point onwards it was up to me to make it happen.
A challenge arose in the final week when there were less than 3 sign ups. I decided to bring it up in the May committee meeting. A collective decision was made at the meeting to open up the workshop to other university students who might be interested and able to attend. Over the next few days, sign-ups quickly rose from 3 to 12 which meant that the workshop could actually take place and it was amazing to see this happen directly as a result of the effort and support by the committee towards the event.
