The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Brunei Darussalam Network held its 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Saturday, 1st November 2016 at Radisson Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan. The AGM received the Chairman’s Report for the Session 2015/2016 and the audited account for the Session 2015/2016 from the Honorary Treasurer.  In the AGM, the Office Bearers, Management Committee Members and Auditors for the term 2016/2017 were elected.

The new management committee is comprised of professionals from both the government and private institutions.  Simon Leong Kian Ann from KR Kamarulzaman & Associates has been elected as the Honorary Chairman for the new management committee.  Also elected was Lt. Col (U) Schufin bin Hj Brahim from the Ministry of Defence as Honorary Vice Chairman, Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar from the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) as the Honorary Secretary and Major Wan Farhan bin Hj Ibrahim from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as the Honorary Assistant Secretary, while Pg Hj Masle bin Pg Hj Hamid will take office as the Honorary Treasurer.  

 
Other committee members are Dr. Tang Shi Siong (Assistant Treasurer), Freddie Stephen Tong, Hj Amrinal bin Hj Amir, Ong Boon Jing, Muhd Aminuddin Mohd Yussof, Tan Kah Wee and Mohammad Hilmi bin Hassan. The IET Young Professional Section elected Ong Boon Jing as YPS Chairman, Tay Shieh Cherng as YPS Vice-Chairman, Lo Yuan Sheng as Secretary and Ms Tieng Chwei Peng, Onn Hui Jin, Muizz Alipah, Md Khairul Anwar bin Bakar, Ak Mohd Abd Aziz Pg Hj Hassan, Hj Muhammad Noor Azmi Hj Suhaimin and Mohd Khairuddin Jaya as the YPS Member. Luis Arceno and KK Chong were also elected to become the auditors for 2016/2017.

In the AGM, the Honorary Chairman reiterated the vision and mission of IET and what the IET Brunei Local Network stood for. The IET Brunei sets its vision in sharing and advancing knowledge throughout the global Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) community contributing towards national development.  With a mission among others, is to establish a culture of professionalism highly valued and appreciated by all in Brunei Darussalam. Increased membership and collaboration with relevant stakeholders will be key success factors in achieving this mission. The Chairman reported that there is encouraging increase of membership. In October 2015 the total number of member was 224 compare to October 2016 with a total of 229 member.

 
The 2015/2016 session marked several milestones and achievements in promoting IET to the public in general, industry and the government sectors. Of particular highlight was the use of social media to disseminate events and activities as well as using facebook. Among the activities organised by IET Brunei LN are: 

- Best Student awards to two students from University Technology Brunei and two from Politeknik Brunei,

- Talk on IP protection to promote innovation and growth,

- IET Membership drive,

- Safety talk on Road Safety by Mr Clifford Sta Maria, a New Zealand certified driving safety consultant and training manager,

- Technical visit to CAE Brunei Multi Purpose Training Centre by Polytechnic Brunei Students,

- Technical visit to the Sungai Kebun Bridge that link the capital city to Sungai Kebun,

- Faraday’s Challenge Mission to Mars,

- presentation to Government Schools on STEM,

- Technical Visit to Tutong Dam with PUJA committees, i

- Inauguration of Politeknik Brunei IET Student Group,

- Technical visit to Telesai Earth Station by University Technology Brunei,

- support Politeknik Brunei ICT INNOVA.8 event,

- Teambuilding for the IET Young Professional Section,

- technical visit to cement production at BHC,

- IET Brunei LN Members’ night,

- Present Around The World competition,

- SUpport Politeknik Brunei in the Shell Eco Marathon,

- Visit to rural areas in Belait District to view the areas to be installed solar panel project.


The AGM ended with an interesting and informative technical talk entitled ‘Financial Management for Engineers’ By Dr William Voon.
