The IET’s Vision & Imaging Committee is made up of a group of dedicated volunteers brought together to organise a programme of activities for engineers working in and researching the fields of Vision & Imaging.

If you would like to know more about the committee or volunteer your time to help with our activities, please get in touch with any of the current committee volunteers listed below.

Sergio Velastin

Chairman

Sergio A. Velastin obtained his Master (by research) in 1979 and his PhD in 1982 from the University of Manchester for work on machine vision systems for monitoring people and vehicles. After a postdoc in robotics and work as a research and development engineer, he returned to academia working for 10 years at Kings College London (University of London) and 12 years at Kingston University London where he became a Professor of Applied Computer Vision and director of its "Digital Imaging Research Centre". In 2001 he also co-founded Ipsotek Ltd, a leading British SMEs in video analysis. Dr Velastin is also a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the IET, IEEE Senior Member, Associate Editor of Computer Vision research journal (IET), international director of the Institute of Visual Computing National University of Malaysia and Visiting Professor of Kingston University London. He joined the Department of Informatic Engineering at the University of Santiago de Chile as a research professor in June 2013. His main research interests are pedestrian detection, human action recognition, vehicular traffic monitoring and ambient assisted living.

Farzin Deravi

Member

Farzin Deravi obtained his first degree in Engineering and Economics from the University of Oxford in 1981 and his M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from Imperial College, University of London in 1982. From 1983 to 1987 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Wales, Swansea where he obtained his Ph.D. In 1987 he joined the academic staff at Swansea where he was active in teaching and research in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In 1998 he joined the Department of Electronics at the University of Kent where he is Reader in Information Engineering. His current research interests include pattern recognition, information fusion, computer vision, image processing, fractals and self-similarity, biometrics, bio-signals and assistive technologies. Dr Deravi is a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the British Machine Vision Association. He was the founding chair of the IET Professional Network on Visual Information Engineering and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the IET Image Processing journal. He also serves on BSI and ISO committees on Biometric Standardisation.

Dimitrios Makris

Member

Dr Dimitrios Makris is an Associate Professor at the Digital Imaging Research Centre at Kingston University. His work on learning scene semantic models and on multiple camera surveillance systems has been highly acknowledged by the international research community. His recent work is in the area of non-linear dimensionality reduction of time sequences (incl. Best Poster Paper in BMVC11) with applications in human action recognition, style modelling and human body tracking.  He was one of the only two UK academics that have been interviewed by ZDF/Discovery Channel for their documentary: "2057 – The World in 50 years".  His research interests are Computer Vision, Machine Learning and in particular Motion Analysis and Dimensionality Reduction.
