On 23 July 2025, a group of enthusiastic engineers embarked on a unique and enriching journey at the SMRT Kim Chuan depot. This visit provided participants with valuable insights into the intricate workings of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Circle Line network. The experience was further enhanced by a series of informative technical presentations delivered by SMRT staff, including Tan Eng Hwa, Kwek Hyen Chee, Danny Christian, Chia Wee Lee, Chen Tian'en, Lee Tek Kiang, Yulius Setiadi Fariadi, and Joanne Toh.
The day began with an in-depth look at real-time operations management and train monitoring processes, showcased by the SMRT Overwatch System in the Circle Line Operations Control Centre. Participants were able to observe firsthand how the system ensures the smooth and efficient running of the MRT network. This was followed by an introduction to SMRT’s maintenance planning and asset management practices at the Maintenance Engineering Centre and Engineering & Data Analytics Centre. These sessions highlighted the meticulous planning and advanced technology that underpin SMRT’s maintenance protocols.
One of the most engaging parts of the visit was the opportunity to witness hands-on engineering work at the Rail Workshop. Here, participants saw the practical application of engineering principles in maintaining and repairing the MRT trains. This hands-on experience was invaluable in understanding the complexities and challenges involved in keeping the MRT system running smoothly.
During a light refreshment break, participants had the chance to engage with SMRT staff in a more informal setting. This interactive session fostered a sense of community and collaboration, allowing participants to ask questions, share experiences, and gain deeper insights into the workings of the MRT system. The open dialogue and exchange of ideas further enhanced the learning experience, making it a truly memorable visit.
The site visit not only deepened the participants' understanding of the MRT system but also highlighted SMRT’s impressive capabilities in rail operations, maintenance protocols, technological advancements, and engineering practices. These elements are crucial in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Singapore's MRT system. The visit underscored the importance of continuous learning and innovation in the field of engineering, inspiring participants to apply these insights in their own work.
Special thanks go to the host, Mr. Ngien Hoon Ping, Group CEO, and Mr. Tan Eng Hwa and his team of SMRT staff for their kind support. Their efforts, along with the planning and organization by Assoc. Prof. Andrew Keong Ng from the IET Singapore Network Transport Section, made this site visit a resounding success.
