In this essay, I will argue that the incorporation of these cutting-edge technologies in warships will not only ensure their continued relevance but will also enhance their ability to use or deter threats, leading to a significant operational advantage. To substantiate this argument, I will examine the impact of missiles and DE weapons on naval warfare, the importance of adaptability, embracing new technology in real-time and the need for a collaborative approach to naval defence.

The development of modern missiles, particularly hypersonic and anti-ship variants, has significantly altered the landscape of naval warfare. These advanced missiles, with their unprecedented speed and maneuverability, can pose a substantial threat to even the most well-defended warships. However, this does not mean that warships will become obsolete. Instead, it underscores the need for continued investment in research and development to ensure that warships are capable of detecting, tracking, and intercepting these advanced missiles. For instance, the UK's Royal Navy is currently developing the Sea Captor missile system, which is designed to counter supersonic and subsonic missile threats. As missile technology advances, it is crucial that naval defence systems also evolve to maintain the viability of warships in the face of these threats. Additionally, the development of cooperative engagement capabilities among allied forces can help improve situational awareness and response times in countering such threats.

DE weapons, such as lasers and electromagnetic pulse weapons, are increasingly being viewed as the future of naval combat. Their ability to deliver precise, rapid, and scalable effects on target with minimal collateral damage makes them an attractive option for defence and deterrence. Despite decades of development and some recent successes there is still a reasonably long way to go before these weapons become fully operational and integrated into naval platforms. Moreover, as DE weapons become more prevalent, it is likely that countermeasures are being developed to defend against them. Consequently, rather than rendering warships obsolete, DE weapons will likely contribute to the ongoing evolution of naval warfare and necessitate further innovation in warship design and defence systems.

The adaptability of warships is a crucial factor in ensuring their continued relevance in the face of emerging threats. As demonstrated throughout history, warships have continually evolved to meet changing operational demands and technological advancements. For example, the shift from sail-powered wooden ships to steam-powered ironclads in the 19th century or the transition from battleships to aircraft carriers in the 20th century are testaments to the adaptability of naval platforms. This is where the future of warships lies - in their ability to evolve and stay ahead of emerging threats. In the context of modern missiles and DE weapons, warships must continue to adapt their design, systems, and tactics to effectively incorporate these new technologies.

The combined expertise and resources of these allied nations can expedite the innovation and implementation of novel defence solutions, bolstering the collective security posture of the alliance and fostering a more resilient and robust deterrence strategy in an increasingly challenging global contested security landscape.
