On Tuesday 7th March the IET East Midlands welcomed competitors from around the region to Derby Roundhouse to compete in the IET’s presentation competition for students and young professionals (open to anyone aged 18-30 with a passion for engineering).

The night was a great success with 6 insightful topics explored by the enthusiastic speakers. A wide range of areas were covered from electric transportation and the environment to block chain technology and artificial intelligence. It was refreshing for the audience to see engineers with such a wide field of interest, even outside their respective industries.

The judging was incredibly close; however Anthony Chow came away the winner after an animated talk on why he loves battery powered trains, and why [we] should too. With the current COVID-19 situation the competition is suspended for the year, but Anthony will continue into the next stage in 2021.

The audience support was greatly appreciated and from the feedback we have received it was an overwhelmingly positive experience, with 100% of attendees saying they would recommend the event.

I would like to thank the three judges who gave their time and provided constructive feedback to the competitors, enriching their event experience – Roger Underwood (Romax and IET East Midlands Committee), Professor Mark Tyrer (Coventry University) and Mark Coney (East Midlands Rail).

We wish everyone well during this challenging time, and hope to be back with more events soon!

Michelle Tindall – Derby/Notts IET
  • Interesting insights to a broad range of industries and technologies from enthusiastic presenters who shared personal observations.  A reflection of the continuing economic relevance of the East Midlands and Derby in particular. Present Around The World reinforces the value of listening to topics outside your usual interests and provides the opportunity to share opinion and thoughts in a social environment.  With strong interest from participants and a supportive audience, suitable arrangements to continue this programme are essential.  Thank you to Michelle for organising the event and I look forward to the 2020 programme.
