International Volunteer Day (IVD), celebrated on 5 December, is a global observance established by the United Nations in 1985 to recognise the incredible contributions of volunteers everywhere. It’s a day to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and the power of people-led solutions to our shared challenges.
To all our volunteers at the IET: you’re not just a part of our organisation, you’re at the very heart of everything we do. From inspiring young minds to shaping professional standards and influencing policy, your commitment helps us engineer a better world, together.
This year’s theme focuses on the power of collective action, and we couldn’t think of a better example than showcasing the remarkable things you’ve achieved as a community. Together, you’ve delivered these exceptional highlights in 2025:
- Over 90 Local Networks organised 890 events, reaching and inspiring 44,877 people worldwide.
- 18 Local Networks awarded 60 university students with Local Network Excellence Prizes, helping the next generation of engineers thrive.
- 112 volunteers contributed to 20 codes and guidance titles, including high-profile projects like the Cost Transmission Report launched in Parliament, and guides on AI in Functional Safety and EV Charging Infrastructure.
- 270 members were supported by our professional registration mentors, helping them take the next step in their careers.
- Our Awards Panels and assessors, made up of 81 volunteers, reviewed 660 applications, recognising 248 members for their outstanding contributions to engineering and technology.
These numbers tell an incredible story of the impact you’ve made, but the true power of volunteering goes beyond the data. It’s about the connections you’ve built, the confidence you’ve grown, and the lives you’ve touched along the way.
As one mentee shared:
“My mentor didn’t just guide me through the registration process – they gave me the confidence to believe in myself.”
And from an IET mentor:
“Seeing someone achieve their goals because of your support is the most rewarding part of volunteering.”
Volunteering is so much more than just giving your time. It’s about discovering what you’re good at, building networks, and developing skills that enrich both your personal and professional lives. When you volunteer, you’re shaping futures, including your own.
To every IET volunteer, thank you for everything you’ve given over the the past year. Your dedication, generosity and passion don’t just make a difference, they inspire us all. You are the reason we can achieve so much together, and your impact truly reaches far beyond today. We’re proud to have you as part of our community and we celebrate the incredible roles you play in the future of engineering and technology.
