A PERSONNEL from the Ministry of Defence yesterday took home the first prize of the Present Around The World (PATW) 2015 competition for her creative idea on building a concrete canoe.

Tieng Chwei Peng’s winning presentation covered intricate explanation about the engineering aspects of building a floating concrete canoe including material research, hull design, structural analysis, engineering construction and project management taking in example from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National concrete canoe competition.



She beat eight other competitors at the competition organised by the The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam and not only brought home $300, a certificate and a one-year free IET membership but she is also set to represent the nation at the Asia Pacific Regional PATW 2015 Finals Competition.

Meanwhile, runner-up Geoffrey Vun, from the competition host Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) won $200, a certificate and one -year IET membership for his presentation titled ‘Heat Treatment of Steels’.



Other institutions who participated in the competition included Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Politeknik Brunei, Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology, Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School, Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong) including young professionals from government agencies, who presented a 10-minute topic related to engineering and technology followed by a five-minute question and answer session.



IET Brunei, which was established 14 years ago, strives for professional development that contributes to national development through organising professional visits, workshops and technical talks in the fields of engineering and technology.
