The CPD Elements blog series aims to look in a bit more detail at the types of activities that can count as CPD.

We know that our members work in a range of roles and across a number of sectors, so we recognise a wide range of CPD activities.  We also don’t limit this recognition to only IET products and accept CPD from any source relevant to each member as we know you are best placed to decide what CPD is appropriate for you.

Training

Training is perhaps the most recognised of the different types of CPD that our members undertake, but not all members have access to training courses as part of their development, and it is not always the most beneficial way for members to learn; in fact the 70:20:10 model for learning and development suggests that as little as 10% of lessons learned come from courses and training.  This is important as training is one of six different CPD activities types recognised by the IET and should be part of a mix of activities you undertake depending on what is right for you.

In order to help, the IET run a number of training courses and webinars that you can count toward your CPD.  These include:

  • Lifeskills - these events run in local networks by professional skills trainers are designed to provide a brief introduction to key soft skills.

  • Webinars - these online courses cover a number of key skills topics.

You can record any training for both CPD and CV purposes in Career Manager under Personal Details on the Training tab. For further information on how to record your CPD activities in Career Manager you can download the quick guide or view our CPD webinar (available at anytime)
