The CPD Elements blog series aims to look in a bit more detail at the types of activities that can count as CPD.

We know that our members work in a range of roles and across a number of sectors, so we recognise a wide range of CPD activities.  We also don’t limit this recognition to only IET products and accept CPD from any source relevant to each member as we know you are best placed to decide what CPD is appropriate for you.

Volunteering

Volunteering can help you to develop your skills whilst giving you a degree of personal satisfaction as well as providing benefit to others. There are a number of skills you can gain from volunteering such as influencing, negotiating, chairing meetings, communication, project or budgetary management as well as guiding others.

Many volunteer roles are available, depending on your experience and the time you have available to commit. If you are interested in volunteering with the IET you can find a list of opportunities on the IET volunteer website

We recognise that other volunteering roles, not just those within the IET, can provide CPD activities as we are aware that such  roles support the development of soft skills or financial and leadership skills.

You can record any volunteering as a CPD Activity in Career Manager and add reflection on how you benefitted from it.  If you undertake a regular volunteering role, you do not have to add reflection for each occasion that you undertake volunteering but should consider what you have learned from these events as part of your reflection.  For further information on how to record your CPD activities in Career Manager you can download the quick guide or view our CPD webinar (available at anytime)
