The IET provide a number of product and services which can provide valuable CPD for both members and non-members.  In this blog, we hope to highlight just one of these many products which can provide valuable information and CPD for you in support of your career.

As part of their work to inform the wider engineering community and influence government on issues affecting society, the IET produce a number of factfiles which use members’ expertise to inform other members and the public on a range of engineering topics including

energy, health and safety, information technology, transport and manufacturing.

Factfiles cover a number of technical subjects as well as providing information on issues that affect daily lives such as the possible health effects of mobile phones and pylons which have a wider interest than the immediate engineering community.  Using the expertise of the IET’s multi-disciplinary and experienced membership means that many of the documents, especially energy related, have been used by the House of Commons Library to inform MPs of important issues on forthcoming parliamentary debates.

These factfiles are available free of charge on the IET website, and there is a comprehensive list of all of the available content along with their abstracts at:  http://www.theiet.org/factfiles/factfiles-list-page.cfm.  Using this list will allow you to find areas that interest you and allow you to plan your CPD accordingly.

The amount of CPD hours and reflection on what you have learned will be subjective based on how many of the documents you read or access and any further self-study you undertake as some also provide links to further information or references which may lead to further CPD opportunities as you read and develop.  The factfiles may also act as a springboard into further, independent research or you may wish to undertake some additional learning by searching for key topics within the IET library based on the facts provided.

If you wish to receive further hints and tips on CPD email your name and membership number to cpd@theiet.org using "CPD hints and tips" as the subject line.
