On the 28th October, IET members attended a half day event organised by the Institute of Physics concerning the "End of Magnox Generation". The closure of the Wylfa Magnox reactor on the 31st December will mean that the last of this type of reactor will no longer be in use anywhere in the world. The event was attended by around 150 people from several professional institutions. We heard about Nuclear safety, the Magnox reactors have been running for sixty years with no major safety incidents, history of nuclear power from the earliest times when radioactivity was discovered to the present day, fuel rods being manufactured, the demand in 1960 was for 257,371 rods for plants all over the world! The evolution of Magnox means that Wylfa generated for forty two years, the maintenance and fault finding techniques involved. In all 1,000Tw of Magnox electricity has been generated. Disposal of waste was looked at and finally the future Horizon development was discussed. Many thanks to the IOP for arranging this event and also the free lunch!
