Hello Everyone,
My name is Pranali and I am volunteer member of IET North Yorkshire Local Network.
Over the past few months, the IET North Yorkshire Local Network has been actively involved in a series of inspiring events aimed at promoting sustainability, climate resilience, and engineering education. These initiatives have not only sparked meaningful conversations but also brought communities together to explore innovative solutions for a better future.
The first event took place on 6th May 2025 at the picturesque Museum Gardens in York, where Kevin Smalley and Joe Hodgekinson delivered a compelling talk for the York Philosophical Society. The focus was on Sustainable Drainage Solutions (SuDS) and their environmental benefits for cities like York. Drawing on Kevin’s research, the presentation highlighted the increasing threat of urban flooding and the vital role SuDS play in mitigating this risk. Kevin shared historical examples of flooding in York and explained how SuDS integrate into broader water management strategies. A key highlight was the Mansfield Flood Resilience Project—currently the UK’s largest SuDS initiative—which showcased engineering excellence, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. The lessons learned from this project offered valuable insights for future urban planning.
Next, on 1st June 2025, the IET North Yorkshire team sponsored a thought-provoking talk at York Explore Library as part of the York Festival of Ideas. Delivered by David Trusdale, Principal Advisor for Climate Change and Net Zero at Newcastle City Council, the session explored the multifaceted journey towards achieving Net Zero. David addressed the technical, financial, and societal challenges involved, while also emphasising the broader benefits of climate action. His message was clear: reaching Net Zero is not just a target, but a pathway to a more resilient and equitable society. The talk encouraged attendees to think beyond carbon reduction and consider the transformative potential of sustainable innovation.

On 8th June 2025, the team participated in the Discovery Zone event at the University of York’s Ron Cooke Hub. This family-friendly event was a hit with children and parents alike. Our interactive table featured robots and hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity in young minds. We distributed IET booklets tailored for aspiring engineers and gifted IET pens to visitors. It was heartening to see so many young people engaging with engineering concepts and imagining their future in STEM fields.

Finally, on 7th June 2025, members of the IET North Yorkshire Local Network attended the York Festival of Ideas Thank You Dinner at the Ron Cooke Hub. This elegant evening provided an opportunity to network with fellow sponsors and speakers, celebrate the success of the festival, and enjoy some delicious food. It was a fitting conclusion to a series of events that truly embodied the spirit of collaboration and innovation.
These events reflect our commitment to fostering dialogue, education, and action around sustainability and engineering. Whether through technical talks or community outreach, we aim to inspire change and empower the next generation.
What do you think is the most effective way to engage communities in climate resilience and sustainable engineering?
