The IET’s upcoming Space and Communications Conference offers a unique opportunity to explore the cutting-edge advancements shaping the future of communication technologies. Co-locating three unique multi-track conferences, IET Space and Communications Week offers three key tracks - Satellite Communications, 6G Communications and Quantum Communications. The conference will provide in-depth discussions on the innovations poised to transform how we connect, communicate, and share information.
Satellite Communications: revolutionising connectivity across the globe
Satellite communications have evolved significantly, playing an essential role in bridging global connectivity gaps. The satcoms track will explore the latest developments in high-throughput satellites, which are designed to deliver faster and more reliable internet to remote and underserved regions. In addition, the integration of non-terrestrial networks with 5G will be a key topic, highlighting how satellites can complement terrestrial networks to ensure seamless connectivity worldwide.
The discussions will also explore the role of phased array antennas in enhancing the efficiency and performance of satellite systems, as well as the challenges of launching and maintaining these technologies in space. The session will emphasise the critical role satcoms play in ensuring connectivity across industries ranging from telecommunications and broadcasting to disaster recovery and military operations.
6G Communications: enabling the next generation of wireless connectivity
With 5G still in development, the exploration of 6G technologies represents the next leap forward in wireless communication. Set to roll out in the 2030s, 6G promises to deliver ultra-fast speeds, near-zero latency, and the ability to connect an unprecedented number of devices simultaneously. The 6G track will delve into the technologies that will power this future, including the use of millimetre-wave frequencies, advanced adaptive beamforming, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) for intelligent network management and optimisation.
Experts will also discuss the transformative potential of 6G in enabling futuristic applications, from autonomous vehicles and remote medical procedures to immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences. In addition to exploring technological innovations, the track will address key challenges - such as ensuring security in ultra-connected environments and ensuring equitable global coverage.
Quantum Communications: pioneering secure networks for the future
Quantum communications are emerging as the next frontier in secure data transmission. By leveraging the strange and powerful principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, quantum key distribution (QKD) offers the promise of ultra-secure networks that are impervious to traditional hacking methods. In this track, experts will discuss the latest advancements in QKD protocols, and how they’re set to revolutionise cybersecurity by making data transmission virtually unbreakable.
Beyond encryption, quantum communication networks have the potential to enable highly secure, decentralised data sharing across industries such as finance, healthcare, defence and government. The track will explore the engineering challenges and potential breakthroughs that could accelerate the deployment of quantum networks, including quantum memory, quantum repeaters and quantum-enabled satellites as well as the future applications of quantum networks over the coming years.
