As September arrives, many of us are shifting gears. For those of us in the UK, the summer holidays are behind us and the rhythm of work is picking up again.
Whether you're on site, in the lab, or at your desk, the change of season can bring a sense of renewal and productivity. But it can also leave many of us feeling a bit... flat.
Particularly if you're in a technical or project-driven role, or an engineering student, September often means diving back into complex tasks, tight timelines and high expectations.
And with responsibilities ramping up, days getting shorter and mornings getting colder? It's understandable to experience a dip in mood, lower energy, or more stress. That's why it's more important than ever to check in with how you're feeling.
A quick, confidential way to check in
Foothold’s Mental Health Check-In tool is designed to help you do just that. It’s a quick, easy, and completely confidential way to take stock of how you’re feeling. Whether you’re experiencing worry, anxiety, low mood, or just want to understand your emotional state better, this tool is here to support you.
Mental Health Check-In is:
- Free to use
- Completely confidential – your responses are private and secure.
- ️ Quick to complete – it only takes a few minutes.
- Available 24/7 – use it whenever you need.
How it works
The Mental Health Check-In tool asks you a series of clinically validated questions to assess your current emotional wellbeing. These questions are designed to help you reflect on your experiences of worry, anxiety and low mood.
Once completed, you’ll get a score indicating whether your levels are minimal, low, moderate, or high.
You’ll also get a personalised, downloadable report with tailored advice and links to support options – whether you’re looking for someone to talk to, practical resources, or just a clearer understanding of your emotional wellbeing.
A starting point for further support
If your results suggest moderate or high levels of anxiety or low mood, and you’re considering speaking to your GP, this report can be helpful to bring along. It provides a snapshot of how you’ve been feeling, which can make it easier to start that conversation.
Many people find it hard to talk about mental health with their doctor, especially when they aren’t sure how to describe what they’re feeling. Having something concrete to refer to can take some of the pressure off and help guide the discussion.

Why it matters
Our mental health is a system that needs regular maintenance, just like any other. And just like preventative maintenance, it's more effective when done early and proactively.
Mental health isn’t something we should only think about when we’re struggling. It’s something to nurture regularly, just like physical health. Taking a few minutes to check in with yourself can help you catch early signs of stress or low mood before they start affecting your work or life.
So, whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, a little off, or just curious about your emotional wellbeing, the Mental Health Check-In is a great place to start.
Your Foothold Is Here
However you’re feeling right now – energised, anxious, hopeful or uncertain – Foothold is here to support you. You don’t have to navigate this season alone. Use the Mental Health Check-In today and take that first step toward understanding and supporting your mental wellbeing.
