Many engineers and technicians aspire to achieve professional registration but without the proper planning it can remain an abstract goal.  Make a commitment to work toward professional registration by letting the IET know your intention to apply for professional registration and we can help you plan your development and keep you on track.  See How to Register Your Intent in Career Manager.

Consider your progress so far

UK-SPEC is the standard that you need to demonstrate for professional registration, but it takes time to develop the required competence. A structured approach will assist you to build the required knowledge, skills and experience for professional registration in an efficient way.

You may already have some knowledge and skills that will set you on the path to professional registration.  For example, if you have undertaken a placement year as part of a programme of formal study or done some voluntary work as an IET volunteer, this will set you in good stead to start your progress.

Using Career Manager, the IET’s online professional development system, you can assess yourself against the competences for registration to see which areas you already have knowledge in.  Career Manager also allows you to identify areas where you currently have no knowledge so you can recognise areas for development.

Make a plan

Whether it’s a to-do list or a business case for a project, writing down what you need to do makes you more likely to remember it and takes your goal from just an intention and turns it into a plan of action.

Career Manager allows you to plan the development objectives and actions you need to undertake and formulate a plan.  If you’re not sure where to start with your plan then discuss it with your mentor or line manager as they may be able to suggest a place to make a start.

The IET run “Want to be Professionally Registered?” workshops throughout the IET’s UK Local Networks as part of their Lifeskills programme of short, interactive evening sessions, which are free to attend.
