From “What is CEng?” to “How do I actually apply?”
Today, I had the pleasure of co-delivering a practical workshop with Dr Andrew Hutchinson

“How to Apply for CEng: From Application to the interview”

The workshop was deliberately focused on application rather than definition. We took participants step by step through the CEng application process, with particular emphasis on the IET route, the required documentation, and—most importantly—how to prepare a Verified UK-SPEC Assessment Summary and demonstrate evidence against the UK-SPEC competencies.
We used real examples and application scenarios relevant to both academic and industrial backgrounds, helping participants relate the requirements to their own professional experience.

The feedback was extremely encouraging. Participants highlighted the practical examples, individual discussion, case analysis and clear guidance on UK-SPEC, with one describing it as:
“One of the most useful workshops the School has provided to us.”
Another participant highlighted the value of the “practical information and examples” and the insights from people who had actually completed the process.

A special thank you to Matthew Jacobs for the excellent organisation and logistics. Thank you, Prof. Dan Gladwin, for the support, and of course to all the attendees for their engagement and encouraging feedback.

As an IET Volunteer, I am pleased that we can also offer this type of practical, step-by-step CEng application workshop under the IET and Institution of Engineering and Technology - IET South Yorkshire umbrella to other departments, schools and groups interested in supporting colleagues towards professional registration.

CEng is not only about understanding UK-SPEC—it is about knowing how to evidence your experience and turn it into a strong application.
