THE Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam Local Network celebrated its 20th anniversary with a dinner at the Radisson Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan.



The guest of honour was Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Engineer Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar. Deputy Minister of Development Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin; Legislative Council member and President of Institution of Surveyors, Engineering and Architects (PUJA) Brunei Yang Berhormat Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman; permanent secretaries; deputy permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Development; senior government officials; and sponsors were also present.



In his speech, Minister of Development highlighted the need of increasing collaboration for innovation and research between industries in both the public and private sectors with the academic institutions, encouraging sustainable innovation and more research opportunities.



“I believe, that the capability and capacity to achieve this aspiration are already embedded within our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community in Brunei,” said the minister.



“Thus we are urging our STEM community to be affiliated and be more involved with professional societies like the IET Brunei. Because with the right mix of professionals having a wide range of multidisciplinary backgrounds, and with enough membership support, professional societies like the IET Brunei can lead and aspire to achieve this goal.”



The event also saw a mini exhibition organised by the Young Professional Section (YPS), IET Brunei Darussalam and presentation of certificates of appreciation to honour past Honorary Chairman of IET Brunei Darussalam. A technical talk on ‘Monitoring the Environment and the Forest – Internet of Trees (IoT)’ by Dean of Faculty of Integrated Technologies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam Professor Chandratilak De Silva Liyanage was also presented at the event.



The IET Brunei Darussalam Local Network is a branch of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET UK). The local network was inaugurated on November 29, 1997 when it was formerly called the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), according to a press release.



IET was formed in 2006 by merging the IEE and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) together. It is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community.



IET has more than 168,000 members in 150 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. It is also the most multi-disciplinary to reflect the increasingly diverse nature of engineering in the 21st Century.



Being part of this professional network, IET Brunei sets its vision in sharing and advancing knowledge throughout the global Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics community contributing towards national development.
