The aim of the activity is to give students the opportunity to research, design and make prototype solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems. This is in-line with the IET Brunei vision and mission in promoting the general advancement of science, engineering and technology and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on these subjects amongst the general public especially students. The details of the event were as follows:

Event:                                 IET DIY Faraday Challenge National Final
Targeted Date:                 2nd September 2018 (Sunday)
Time:                                   8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Venue:                                Aman Hills Shopping Centre
Participants:                     36 students (6 Teams)

The challenge was designed for six teams of six students (36 students in total) in Year 9 and it was based on the IET Faraday Challenge events held at secondary schools in the United Kingdom. Students were given tasks as engineer specialists recruited by a mock company and were asked to design and construct a prototype within the limited time.

The whole exercise gave the students insight into the roles and responsibilities of an engineering team as they not only attempted to create their prototypes but then had to justify their ideas, costs and implementation plans to the judges.   This challenge also encourages the development of students’ problem solving, team working and communication skills.

Chung Hwa Middle School (BSB) emerged as the winner of this final who then received cash prize of BND$1000.00, a computer and 80 cinema tickets as well as certificates. The runner up for this round are Chung Hua Middle School (KB) and St George’s school who won themselves cash prize of $500 and $300 respectively as well as certificates. The cash prizes were presented by Lt. Col. (U) Schufin bin Hj Brahim, the IET Brunei Darussalam Honorary Chairman for 2017-2019 Session and cinema tickets were presented by Simon Leong.

IET & OGDC would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers especially the students from Universiti Teknologi Brunei and Politeknik Brunei.
