2 minute read time.
IET London Hammersmith group is run by volunteers. Engineers, just like you, who give just few hours of their time each month to further our profession and our institution.

These volunteers:-

              plan, organise and deliver our events programme that we run throughout the year, with guest speakers talking on hot engineering subjects;

              they prepare and manage our budget;

              keep our web site up to date and arrange publicity for events;

              advise on professional registration;

              work with schools to encourage careers in engineering;

              liaise with our universities and student groups;

              help build relationships with engineering businesses throughout the Hammersmith area

There is always more to do and just a few hours of your time would make a real difference.

The group was set up in the early 2000s by Simon Maddison and Tony Hardwick, but after Simon became Chairman of the main London Committee the group was run more or less single handed by Tony. He had a small committee to help him, and I was asked by a friend who was on the committee if I would join and help out, which I duly did. Tony’s committee was pretty informal, and he clearly wanted to retire, so I became chairman in late 2009.

Since then, I believe we have put on a consistently good programme of monthly talks (nine per year) with good speakers, and we have also organised other ad hoc events, sometimes jointly with other organisations. We have also made contact with two colleges in our area and regularly award small prizes to top-scoring students on appropriate courses.

After eight years, I feel I should step down, and so the Hammersmith group is looking for a new chairman to continue and develop this work, although I would remain on the committee for the foreseeable future. Guides to succession planning often suggest that when a new chairman takes over, the past chairman should become vice chairman for a year or so, and I would be happy to fulfil this supporting role.

I look forward to hearing from you, with your ideas and commitments.

Yours sincerely

David Tandy
