Integrated Intelligent Bearing Systems (I2BS) for UHPE Webinar

26 May 2022 – 4pm BST

Rolling element bearings provide vital load carrying roles in many rotational applications. In aero-engines these include supports for the main shafts and the main gearbox. While advances in material manufacturing techniques producing very high quality steels significantly reduce the occurrence of unexpected bearing failures, there is a growing demand for intelligent health monitoring of critical components in order to maximise machine efficiency and eliminate catastrophic failures.

Within the Clean Sky project I2BS, the Southampton group and Schaeffler Aerospace Germany and Safran Aircraft Engines France have developed smart engine bearings, integrating multiple sensing techniques, energy harvesters, and wireless communications, for the ultra-high propulsive efficiency (UHPE) ground demonstrator.

In this free seminar, Prof Ling Wang (NCATS) will present:

• The concept of the smart bearing systems
• The strategy and results from the subscale bearing tests
• The intelligence for bearing fault detection developed in this project using both advanced signal processing and machine learning methods
