November 2013 saw the 9th annual LAPC take place at Burleigh Court conference centre in Loughborough University. With over 150 papers submitted and the majority of those from non-UK authors LAPC remains a truly international forum to discuss the most recent developments in antennas and propagation.

Keeping to our tried and tested single track format with the usual relaxed and informal approach, LAPC 2013 was the ideal place to network and exchange ideas with those from academia, industry and government.

Each session featured highly respected invited speakers covering topics in Space Antennas, Radio Propagation, Antenna Modelling, Emerging Technologies in Antennas and the Latest Developments in Antenna Measurements and Simulations.

Videos of these oral presentations are available on IET.tv

New for this year was the inclusion of posters detailing the very latest developments in research giving delegates the opportunity to discuss their current research with their peers prior to publication.

The IET presented 3 awards for the best student paper, the winner being Yuan Ding & Vincent Fusco with their paper entitled “Sidelobe manipulation using Butler Matrix for 60GHz Physical Layer Secure Wireless Communication”, the 1st runners up being Shiyu Zhang, Alford Chauraya, William Whittow, Rob Seager, Tessa M Acti, Tilak Dias & Yiannis Vardoxaglou with their paper entitled “Repeatbility of Embroidered Patch Antennas” and finally 2rd runners up Aykut Cihangir, Fabien Ferrero, Cyril Luxey, Gilles Jacquemod, Emmanuel Larique, Renard Robin & Patrice Brachat with the paper entitled “Turnable Antennas Using MEMS Switches for LTE Mobile Terminals”.

The prize for the best non-student paper went to Marco Ribeiro & Carlos Duque for their paper “Effect of Uniaxial Compression in the Transmittance of a Novel Terahertz Sensor for Structural Health Monitoring”, who received £100 and a beautiful hand-crafted Greek urn presented by Yiannis Vardaxoglou.

The prize giving ceremony for the above awards took place during the annual Monday evening banquet which also featured a fascinating talk from Dr Cyril Mangenot, during which those attending were asked to try to guess where from nature inspiration had been taken for a variety of space antenna designs, and the presentation of the James Roderick James Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr Antoine Roederer.  LAPC were to bring on-board the IET as a joint sponsor of this prestigious award.

LAPC will be back again on the 10th & 11th November for the 10th Anniversary at the 4* conference facilities of Burleigh Court.

The IET's Antennas and Propagation Network is very delighted to collaborate and support this event year after year.
