Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, which are called MXenes are a relatively new class of 2D materials. They offer an extreme versatility in terms of composition, layer thickness, and surface terminations. This makes them ideal model materials to study the influence of theses parameters on tribological behaviour.
