Nintendo's journey began on this day (23rd September) in 1889, not as a video game company but as a playing card manufacturer. Over the years, the company ventured into various businesses, however, it wasn't until the 1970s that Nintendo made its first foray into the video game industry 

The Arcade Era and birth of the home gaming console

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Nintendo introduced arcade games like "Donkey Kong" and "Mario Bros." These games laid the foundation for some of Nintendo's most iconic characters and franchises. Mario, the moustachioed plumber, quickly became synonymous with Nintendo and remains a much loved character to this day.

Nintendo's biggest breakthrough however, came in 1983 with the release of the Family Computer, or Famicom for short, in Japan. This was later rebranded as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) when it was introduced to North America in 1985. The NES revolutionised the gaming industry, single-handedly reviving the home console market after the video game crash of 1983.

With the NES, Nintendo introduced "Super Mario Bros.," to the world, a game that would become an instant classic. The NES also brought us other iconic titles such as "The Legend of Zelda," "Metroid," and "Kid Icarus," solidifying Nintendo's position as a dominant force in the gaming world.

Innovative Hardware and Peripherals

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) brought 16-bit gaming to the masses, while the Game Boy revolutionised handheld gaming.
