Exec member, Lim Yew-Kee,  has been extremely busy recently presenting a series of talks, sponsored by the IET Manufacturing Technical and Professional Network to University students in Penang.  Details of just two of these talks are below.

The 1st Technical Talk was delivered on the 18th December 2013 and was entitled Understanding of Electrical and Electronic Product Development.

A second talk was requested by the lecturers and student committees (1st and 2nd year) from the School of Electronic Engineering at TAR University College in Penang, Malaysia and this was delivered on 18th March 2014 on the subject of "Electrical and Electronic Product Development with Additive Manufacturing (AM)".

Here, Lim Yew-Kee tells us more:

“My presentation was focussed on Additive Manufacturing (AM) its flexibility in assisting design stage till the product assembly process implementation, four different categories of 3D Printing Techniques, namely:

1. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

2. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)

3. Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)

4. Stereolithography (SLA)

Working with the selection of core materials used on new product developed with 3D Printing Machines,  that differential the capabilities and performance on product modelling, e.g.

1. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

2. Polylactide

3. Polyamide

4. Polycarbonate

5. Photopolymers

Further on, I've presented on how AM totally revolutionized the traditional engineering practices that were previously practiced, and has tremendously fastened the new product development processes and product's time to market launch.

The audience of 120-plus students asked many questions  on the design & development of products  that are developed with this emerging technology of 3D Printing.

I am glad to receive such favorable response from the audiences. This was truly an enjoyable technical talk and showed a positive trend for IET to promote engineering to the higher learning institution.".
