We put out a request for speakers, on My Community, to volunteer at this event a couple of months ago and thought that you may like to see how it turned out.



''This event provided strategy for improving and encouraging STEM at early stage for younger girls to enable them make an early decision within STEM career.



Most students who attended the event heard about the event in schools, online, communities, organisations and on the web.



The STEM Event welcomed 35 students from different schools from age 11 and above. A valuation was completed by the students and majority seemed to have enjoyed the event.



The Event was attended by 35 students aged 11 to 18, Aberdeen Lord Provost represented By Counsellor Alan, who gave a speech on government contribution and efforts towards increasing the number of females in STEM careers , 8 speakers and STEM ambassadors.



Onyedikachi Zubi-Emele gave an introduction and brief on STEM for 15mins, this gave the girls an idea what the event was all about. There were testimonials given by Siriol Griffiths. This was followed by an Early Awareness of Engineering presentation by IET Member Catriona Walker; the presentation helped the girls to understand why an early decision in STEM is important.



There were 3 different experiments that were carried out and the 35 girls were involved and supervised by the speakers and STEM ambassadors present.



There was a STEM skill test conducted by Vivian and sponsored by JJLEAP. The test was based on knowledge of Science: Chemistry. It involved the construction of 5 different aliphatic hydrocarbon structures using sweets and marshmallows. The Winner was the person who made the most structures in the given time.



IET Member, Alison Craig spoke about her career through STEM and advised the girls about all they would benefit by considering a career in STEM.



IET volunteer, Emily Middleditch, spoke about ‘The Legobrick road’ this was a great presentation and most of the girls felt the really wanted to go into STEM.



IET Member and organiser of this event, Mavis Amadi, gave a closing remark and also gave a presentation introducing WISE, IET,Babcock international Group, PROSPECT & JJLEAP to the girls.



At the end of the event a valuation forms were filled to get feedback about the workshop. The feedback was great as majority of the Girls enjoyed the event and requested for further activities within the Aberdeen area.



Expenses and Materials

The event had 10 volunteers which includes speakers and STEM ambassadors that helped out on that day.

The IET, WISE & JJLEAP publicised this event.

The IET, Prospect & Babcock international Group sent souvenirs.

The IET provided 3 speakers for the event.

JJLEAP provided the venue and projectors used at the event and also provided refreshments.



Next Year

Most of the girls and all of the speakers would love to have this event next year. '' - Mavis Amadi
