Last Tuesday evening saw the prestigious Rex Johns Student Presentation Prize event take place. This event, that forms part of the IET’s Present Around The World competition and took place at Engineers Australia's Adelaide city centre Divisional Office.  The event saw students from each of the main universities from South Australia compete for first prize of one years free membership to the IET and $300, and second prize of $200.

The IET would like to sincerely thank the judges for giving the time and expertise so willingly.  I am sure the students who took part would also echo this sentiment.

This year, our judges were:

David Tamlin - GPA Engineering

Marek Pszczel - IEEE

Miroslav Kotecki - Stemsel Foundation

The students who participated were from Mechanical and Electrical courses, and the presentations they gave are listed below:

Mitchell Adams (Flinders University) - Mechanical design and preload control of a redundant leg for eliminating backlash on a hexapod robot

Mathew Potaczek (University of South Australia) - Embedded systems for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks - first prize winner

Kiyoon Kim (Adelaide University) - Current-Voltage Tracer experiment

Tobias Wooldridge (Flinders University) - Serval Chat: Serval on iOS

Hugh Considine (University of South Australia) - Compiler verification with hardware and software simulation - second prize winner

Shuaiqi Cao (Adelaide University) - All electrick Vehicle for city use

This event provides not only an excellent opportunity for those interested in finding out what our brightest students invest their time doing, but also affords a fantastic opportunity for our future engineers to begin developing the professional networks that will become more important as their careers progress.  The event also offers industry the opportunity to assess the clarity with which future employees can conduct themselves and simplify complex technical detail into an engaging and digestible form.  It is also valuable opportunity for the students to fine tune their presentational skills in preparation for the final year university presentations.

The IET SA & NT Local Network would like to thank all those who made the event a success.

Event Information

The IET SA&NT Local Network is staging the 2014 IET Rex Johns Student Presentation Prize, which is the state level final for the IET’s prestigious Present Around the World (PATW) competition. It is to be awarded to an individual for excellence in the presentation of his or her final year project. All students, no older than 26 years of age, undertaking the final year of an IET accredited degree in South Australia or Northern Territory are eligible to be nominated by their university to compete for the prizes. Each university can nominate only two candidates from their eligible courses to compete for the prizes and the chance to represent South Australia and Northern Territory in the National Final. The purpose of the competition is to give young engineers the opportunity to enhance their presentation skills, conveying complex technical information to mixed technical and non-technical audiences. For judging purposes, the emphasis is on presentation skills, rather than technical content.

Each individual student presenter will be given 15 minutes for his or her presentation, and a maximum of 5 minutes allowed for questions. There will be a marking panel of three judges. Results will be announced at the end of the evening. The winner will receive a cash prize, a year’s free IET membership and the opportunity to present at the National Final in April 2015, the winner of which will present at the Asia Pacific Regional Final before the final stage of the competition at the Global Final. Second place will also receive a cash prize.
