In line with the theme of field based technologies I took opportunity to see how satellite developments are expected to meet consumer demands by attending a lecture on Satellite Swarms - The Launch of Satellite Mega-Constellations for Global Connectivity by Jonathan Higgins, Director, BeaconSeek Ltd.

A while back, I researched the QoS mechanisms required to provide Wireless VoIP for residential use over a carrier grade network - at the time modelling payloads using the DECT frequency range. Since then, we have seen carrier grade providers create simpler home based TCP/IP apps that allow you to use their carrier grade services on your phone. This is almost the norm now and has set the expectation for all home utility services to have some form of presence on your smart device.

Jonathan discussed why global connectivity is seen as the fourth industrial revolution, how gateway stations are launched and positioned, life of a satellite based of its thrust energy, Kesler effect, ownership of space junk, and how basic current xG services will adapt into the new satellite ecosystems. This was an eye opening event on the current snapshot of the satellite industry and how it will likely effect our existing enterprise environments. Speaking with Jonathon, he discussed how services like VoIP will adapt not only for consumers, but also, how business to business services are expected to be propelled by the opportunities being made available within the new satellite ecosystems. For example, the Bluetooth headsets some organisations use instead of desk phones for their employees could well see the Bluetooth ear piece hardware developed to have wireless codecs and SIM Chip technology integrated allowing the user to walk out the office and through the commodity based services of the new satellite ecosystems, still be connected to the office desk - albeit automatically e.g. if fitness trackers can take advantage of current GPS systems then its likely newer smart ear pieces will be able to do the same.

Interestingly, its technology innovations like these that will keep an organisations risk model in constant review, so regardless of ISO, GDPR, PCI ( or other ), just like organisations have taken advantaged of cloud solutions, the same industry transitions into satellite solutions can to some degree be expected. Maybe the cloud provider might have the economies of scale to subscribe to the new satellite-as-a-commodity service and seamlessly give your organisation the benefits of satellite ecosystems without you even knowing about it. Cyber Security is also expected to be enhanced as new these satellite constellations are expected to be next gen – well beyond current TCP/IP dynamics.

One of the highlights of the lecture was a walk through of a live feed that shows visually all satellites currently in space - Click here !
