The Systems Safety Engineering Technical Network (SSE TN) is excited to share our strategic objectives and plans for 2026. As we look ahead, our focus is clear: to expand our reach, enhance professional development opportunities, and foster collaboration across the industry. This year promises to be transformative, and we invite you to join us on this journey.

Our Vision for 2026

Safety engineering is evolving rapidly, driven by technological innovation and global challenges. At SSE TN, we believe that collaboration and knowledge sharing are key to staying ahead. Our roadmap for 2026 reflects this commitment, with initiatives designed to empower professionals, support emerging talent, and strengthen our community.

Strategic Objectives

  • Collaboration: We aim to work closely with other Technical Networks and external stakeholders to broaden the scope and impact of our activities.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Accessibility is at the heart of our plans. We will produce short, informative videos featuring key speakers to make valuable content available to a wider audience.
  • Career Development: Supporting the next generation of engineers is a priority. We will engage with universities through online career webinars and other initiatives, helping students and graduates explore pathways into systems safety engineering.
  • Volunteer Management: Our volunteers are the backbone of the network. To better utilise their expertise, we will finalise a skills matrix that aligns individual strengths with organisational needs.
  • Succession Planning: Fresh perspectives are essential for growth. We will continue to recruit new volunteers to ensure the network’s longevity and maintain a dynamic, innovative approach.

Webinars and Key Topics for 2026

We have an exciting line-up of webinars planned for the year, many in collaboration with leading organisations:

  • Q2 – May: Routes into Systems Safety Engineering Careers (in partnership with the Safety Critical Systems Club)
  • Q3: Railway Systems for Collision Avoidance

Beyond these, we will explore a diverse range of topics reflecting current industry trends and challenges:

  • Agile Processes and Safety Engineering
  • Functional Safety in EMI and Hydropower Generation
  • Generations and Safety of AI
  • Harmonic Filtering Units for Power Distribution
  • Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE)
  • HAZID and ALARP
  • IT/Cyber Safety and Security Issues with PLCs
  • Incident Management and Lessons Learned Sharing
  • Hydrogen Train Safety (fuel handling, emergency response, depot risks)
  • Systems Integration and the Common Safety Method
  • Training and Competencies, including Legal and Accountability Issues
