About the event:

Presented jointly by speakers from the High Integrity Systems Engineering Group at the University of York and the Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre at the University of Leeds.

This tutorial addresses the dilemmas and duties of engineers when dealing with ethical concerns surrounding safety risk management decisions. The aim of the day is to provide attendees with the knowledge and guidance to identify the ethical questions posed in everyday situations faced in safety critical systems development, assessment and operation


About the speakers:

Dr Mark Nicholson is a Senior Lecturer in System Safety at the University of York. He has researched, taught and consulted in System Safety for over twenty years. He has worked with the maritime, military, aerospace, automotive and railway industries. He was the European editor of ARP 4754a the current acceptable means of compliance for civil aircraft. He is the programme leader of the MSc in safety-Critical Systems at the University of York. He is the programme leader for the Jaguar-Landrover Technical Accreditations scheme activities at York and an external examiner at Bradford University. He has interests in many aspects of system safety including how the safety management system as designed interacts with the safety management system as practiced by those in an organisation. A key element of this interaction is the safety culture of an organisation and the safety ethics of individuals. He has seen numerous examples of differing ethical approaches during his many interactions with industry.

Dr Kevin Macnish

Dr Kevin Macnish is a Teaching Fellow and Consultant in Applied Ethics at the University of Leeds. His research is in the ethics of surveillance, security and technology. He is the author of numerous articles on privacy and surveillance ethics and has organised two international conferences on this subject at the University of Leeds. Kevin has been interviewed by Channel 4, BBC radio and television, and the Atlantic magazine, and has spoken at both the House of Commons and the House of Lords in relation to his research.

Kevin is based at the IDEA-CETL (Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied - Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning), a part of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Leeds.  Here he shares his time between lecturing undergraduates and postgraduates in Engineering, Computer Science, and Chemistry, leading online modules for an MA in Applied and Professional Ethics, and undertaking consultancy work with an ethical focus.
