The first in an occasional series focuses on Dr Ebrahim Mattar, exec team member resident in Bahrain.



Dr. Mattar, (Nickname: Al-Gallaf), has followed an academic career pathway.  Mattar is currently University of Bahrain Assoc. Professor of  Cybernetics & Robotics.  Mattar is also a candidate for the full rank Professor.  He started his career pathway back on 1986 as he received University of Bahrain  BS.c. in Electrical Engineering,  he then pursued his studies for MSc. in Electronics in 1988, University of Southampton, in 1994 he was awarded University of Reading Ph.D. in Cybernetics (more on Robotics Control).  In 2001 he was selected with 30 others for the Gulf Executive Program conducted in USA, he received MBA from Darden School, Virginia University, USA. Mattar has interests in Cybernetics, Multi-finger Robotics Manipulation, Computational Intelligence, Robotics Control and Modeling. This includes fuzzy clustering, ANN, Evolutionary Computation.  He has been lecturing within such areas for a number of years.   Dr. Mattar has published vast number of journal and conferences articles within the area of Robotic, Control, Optimal robotic hand forces, neural net grasping and control, optimal fuzzy control, and Neuro-fuzzy systems, and intelligent control.  He has also served as reviewer for 49 journal articles, and served as in  editorial boards for six journals within the area of robotics and control.  He served  as head of 7 research projects in Bahrain,  and  he is also a member of King Saud University (KSA),  mobile robotics project. 

 

Dr. Mattar is member of number of professional societies locally and internationally. Locally, he is a member of Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE), board member of the Academic Society in Bahrain, board member of the Technology Transfer Society.  Internationally, Dr. Mattar is also a member of  IEEE, member of IEEE Control Society,  IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), member of the IFAC,  an active IET member, IET– Bahrain Network Honorary Chair, X-member of IET EMEA Regional Board, X-member of IET Knowledge Programme Advisory,  and currently he is member of IET Control & Automation TPN.   Dr. Mattar  has been elected as Bahrain honorary chair for the IEE (earlier) and IET (later) for two sessions, and currently he is a head of  Bahrain IET Local Network Committee.  He has been a responsible body for seven IET colloquiums-forums held in Bahrain held during 2010 till 2014.  In addition, Dr. Mattar has been a responsible body for two major conferences held in Bahrain.  In this respect,  he has served  as the organizing head for the International Conference on (Millennium Dawn in Training and Continuing Education), 16-18th of April 2001.  Then he served as the technical committee head member of IET ICIS-2008 International Conference on Intelligent Systems, December 2008 in Bahrain, and responsible body for seven IET symposiums-colloquiums  in Bahrain, including (New Directions in Automatic Control:  Theories and Applications),  Dr. Mattar has also organized vast number of IET events in Bahrain since 2006 till this moment. Having  served the IET in organizing number of local forums,  colloquiums,   and discussion seminars,   during such journey,  there are a number of challenges that  were faced and learned through, may be the most important are inspiring others and building team works. Dr. Mattar has learned lots from such  IET volunteering duties, something has strengthen his capabilities and way of thinking.   He is also working to get the IET fellowship and get IET professional registration. 

Dr. Mattar  was chairing  Continuing Engineering Education Department, University of Bahrain during  (1998-2002).

Dr. Mattar  was also chairing Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, University of Bahrain (2004-2008) and then (2011-2013).  He headed ABET accreditation committee (DAC) for two terms, (2005-2012).  He was awarded University of Bahrain, deanship Best Research Project award in 2001.  He was also awarded  University of Bahrain, College of Engineering Research Award in 2002.  University of Bahrain, College of Engineering best graduation Project Award (2001). (2001-2002) University of Bahrain, President Achievement Awards, (2002). University of Bahrain, College of Engineering best graduation Project Award, (2003). (2005-2006) University of Bahrain, College of Engineering best graduation Project Award.  Bahrain Society of Engineers award for two successive terms 2007 & 2008.   Dr. Mattar,  was selected to run the Bahrain Training Institute  (BTI) , as director general  of the institute during  2011-2013 period of time.   Dr. Mattar is an ABET accreditation expert, as has been leading a team for positive full Electrical Engineering and Electronics Engineering Programs accreditation over the period from 2005-2010, Bahrain University.  Dr. Mattar run up to 20  engineering short courses and workshops in the area of engineering control and automation.  These short courses and workshops have been serving different industries in Bahrain. Written and still writing in Arabic a number of newspaper articles about higher education, research and engineering history.
