Hi all,

The next seminar will be a talk titled "Making Smartphones Smarter" presented by Dr Ronjon Nag

Abstract: Smartphones are now ubiquitous. Everyone has one. Often considered a recent phenomenon, actually current smartphones are the result of accumulated innovations since the first mobile phone was shipped some 30 years ago.  This talk will review how innovations have built upon each other to create modern devices and the role of app ecosystems in creating more engineers and companies.  Will discuss how mobiles may become smarter in the future, discussing what defines intelligence in the context of a machine, and explaining the latest trends in artificial intelligence as they pertain to mobile devices. We will see new user interfaces, machine learning techniques such as deep learning and new developer ecosystems to create devices with more intelligence.

About the speaker: Dr. Ronjon Nag, FIET, is the winner of the 2014 IET Mountbatten Medal awarded at the Royal Institution. He has been a pioneer of smartphones and the 'app stores' they depend on. He pioneered smartphone componentry – touch screens, mobile search, voice recognition, text prediction and handwriting recognition - and smartphone ecosystems, so called app stores. He founded and sold companies,  Lexicus and Cellmania, to Motorola and BlackBerry respectively, resulting in his technologies shipped a billion times. A polymath, he has a 1st class honors B.Sc. in electrical engineering from Birmingham University (UK), a Master of Science degree in management science from MIT, a PhD in Engineering from Cambridge University and was a Harkness Fellow at the Stanford University Psychology Dept. He is on the boards of several mobile and artificial intelligence start-up companies, and advisor to the UC Berkeley SkyDeck Accelerator. He is the alumni Director of MIT Alumni Angels of Northern California and founder of Thinkica, an invention company.
