The winner was the well spoken presenter, Ms. Faheema Baksh.  A recent Mechanical Engineering graduate, of the University of the West Indies (St. Augustine Campus) (UWI), Ms. Baksh spoke about the automation of biomass briquetting machine and how re-engineering the design of the briquetting would alter the efficacy of the energy liberated during combustion.

Ms. Baksh will represent the Caribbean in the Regionals PATW, in Fullerton, California,  on the 26th July.

Out of a panel of three participants, Faheema impressed the judges of the Trinidad & Tobago Local Network with her presentation technique and style.  Her fellow competitors, Mr. Alan Xavier and Mr. Anthony Marc Edwards, of UWI and the University of Trinidad and Tobago, respectively each illustrated that the young professional engineers in Trinidad & Tobago are dedicated, passionate and articulate.

Alan Xavier’s topic centred around an adaptive tuned vibration absorber which was able to adjust its natural frequency to provide adequate vibration control over a broad band of disturbance frequencies.  His presentation concluded that the absorber is affected by the position of an accelerometer and that the absorber was able to reduce the vibrations.

Anthony Edwards focused on the exergy analysis as an effective tool for interpreting and enhancing the PCS Nitrogen’s Ammonia #03 plant processes.  These results illustrated the depth of understanding of a macro environment and the consideration of critical factors that affect the gas turbine, primary reforming furnace, secondary reforming and the amine solution coolers.  He confirmed the importance of the exergy analysis through the savings in natural gas as well as reduction in CO2 emissions.

The judges were members of the LN executive, Mr. Sean Ocho, Mr. Deoraj Beephan and Mr. Colin Chase.  The Chairman, Mr. Anthony Chadee opened the forum and managed the event with the assistance with the PATW Co-ordinator, Mr. Ahmad Mohammed (also an executive member of the LN).

The event concluded with the presentation of the certificates and an overview of the candidates’ benefits in joining the IET.
