In this edition of our volunteer spotlight, we’re pleased to introduce Tommy Cheung. Tommy has been actively involved with the Younger Members Section (YMS) in the Hong Kong Local Network since 2009 and continues to play a key role in inspiring and supporting the next generation of engineers.

Tommy, how did you first get involved with volunteering for the IET?

I actually got involved back in 2009 when I joined the Younger Members Section (YMS) as a student. Since then, I’ve taken on a variety of roles within it, Student Section Coordinator (both Sub Degree and Macau), Local Network Affairs Coordinator, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, and Vice-Chairman.

Out of all those roles, being the Student Section Coordinator was definitely my favourite. It gave me the chance to connect with aspiring engineers, share my own experiences, and organise things like technical visits and career talks. I found it incredibly fulfilling to help guide the next generation and support them as they started shaping their careers.

Being part of the Younger Members Section has been such a positive experience. I have seen first-hand the incredible growth and support that this community offers. YMS serves as a vibrant platform for students, graduates, and young engineers to connect, learn, and thrive.

What a varied journey so far, what’s your current role at the IET, and what does it involve day to day?

Right now, I’m serving as the Chairman of the Younger Members Section (YMS) within the Hong Kong Local Network. I am responsible for connecting and coordinating several sub-teams, like the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) team, our internal and external teams, and the student sections. My main focus is making sure we’re offering high-quality events and opportunities that really benefit our young members. I truly enjoy working with my team and find fulfilment in our collective efforts.

Together we engage with various industry sectors and other professional institutions to stay updated with the latest trends and developments. This role offers me numerous opportunities for continuous learning, which I greatly value.

It sounds like a role full of impact and inspiration. As Chairman of YMS, what’s been a standout project and experience for you?

As the Chairman of YMS for the 2025 session, I am honoured to contribute to the ongoing success of this esteemed section. My commitment is to continue nurturing young professionals, ensuring that we effectively serve all our young members.

One of our flagship events in 2025 is the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition. We’re co-organising it with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) here in Hong Kong, which is a huge honour. The event brings together a wide range of participants, from secondary school students and sub-degree holders to university graduates, postgrads, and professionals already working in the industry. It’s all about creating a space where people can share ideas, showcase innovative engineering solutions, and get inspired by each other’s work.

Wishing your event every success Tommy. Readers interested in the October 2025 event can learn more here: Visit to the Exhibition Session for Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition

Has volunteering influenced your journey overall?

Volunteering with the IET has genuinely shaped my career in so many ways. Through workshops, seminars, and technical visits, I’ve gained valuable insights into the engineering profession. But beyond that, I’ve built lasting friendships and become part of a truly supportive community. These experiences have helped me grow both professionally and personally, and they continue to motivate me to give back and support others on their journey.

For those just starting out, what’s your top tip for making the most of volunteering with the IET?

I’m really grateful for everything I’ve gained through the IET, it’s been such a rewarding journey.

I’d say, get involved and don’t be shy! The IET community is full of opportunities to learn, grow, and connect. Whether it’s through workshops, events, or casual discussions, make the most of every chance to meet fellow members and industry professionals.

Networking is such a powerful part of the experience, and you’ll be surprised how much you can learn just by chatting with others and hearing their stories. And don’t hold back from sharing your own insights too.

And finally, when you’re not volunteering, what do you enjoy doing?

When I’m not volunteering, I love diving into new technologies and attending workshops to keep learning and growing. It’s something I genuinely enjoy, and it helps me stay up to date while also bringing fresh ideas back to the IET community. So even in my downtime, I guess I still like learning.

Thank you, Tommy!

Tommy’s story is a brilliant example of how volunteering with the IET can be both fulfilling and professionally enriching.
