    I'm always fascintated to hear about our wonderful and diverse community members and how they came to be doing the job they do today, so, I thought I'd hand over this blog to David Leng .   David joined the platform in April 2016 and below he tells us more about himself. Looking back on my working life two things strike me: I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have always managed to get paid to do things that I would actually spend my own time doing; and secondly that being in the IET gives me a genuine sense of pride. Not in a big headed, “I’m the great I am” way, but as a quiet achievement after putting in a lot of spade work.   • Predictably Irrational. (IET Harrow).

    In Out In Out ...Opt it all about!. Attending the Predictably Irrational, The Impact Of Relativity event organised by Harrow IET, David Chong from GSMA discussed the different ways of 'opting in and opting out' in numerous consent based scenarios. An interesting stat presented showed that more countries within the EU had a larger number of health donors than for example in the UK - the main difference? Persons are under the Opt Out framework. The session covered that human behaviours can be predicted to choose relative outcomes based off presented data - including how the decision making process can be tailored to a give a focused outcome. Whilst this is typically seen in UX Design efforts, the broader digital world is also going through an Opt In/Opt Out overhaul - namely, GDPR.   • A Is For Academic Study – Support From The IET (TWAVES)

    Although many people complete their studies first (whether it is a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree etc.) and then look for work experience opportunities or employment, some others do two things at the same time and go for extramural studies (or online learning) and work (sometimes even full time!) as well, with others completing sandwich programmes which offer industrial placements as part of the qualification, or even work based learning qualifications. Some people would even consider working and doing a PhD at the same time or they would simply focus on their doctoral research - on condition that they can afford it or get enough funding.     Do you know that IET WA historical links (previously known as STEE) can be dated back to 1886? A copy of IET WA meeting minutes in 1886 At the STEE Council meeting 11 November 1886 it was resolved that Mr D J McGauran, Member, having indicated his willingness to accept such office be and is hereby appointed Local Honorary Secretary & Treasurer of the Society in Western Australia.  Diverse Cultural Backgrounds of the team: The Committee members come from a diverse cultural background and is such a great team!  There are about 16 - 20 committee members.  They have done excellent events such as Bike Charger Event at different universities, Leadership programme, How to win a job, Engineering Challenge.  3 On Campus groups established:  UWA, ECU and Curtin.   • IET Bowling Tournament 2018 - IET Malaysia President Cup

    The Bowling Tournament is organized to create a platform of social event for the IET members and non-IET members. This is also created to make a networking session between IET and other engineering institutions, also to spread the awareness of Institution of Engineering and Technology to the public through the Facebook Promotion. This Bowling event creates opportunity to enhance the engagement between IET members of Main Committee, YPS and On Campuses.   • Cyprus Local Network Supports F1 Education Initiative

    Are you keen to get involved in a project that gives young people ‘hands-on experience’ of engineering?  The Cyprus Local Network did just this when they recently supported the F1 in Schools Cyprus National Final.   F1 in Schools, an Education Partner of the IET, runs a challenge which requires teams of schoolchildren to design, manufacture and race their own model F1 car.  Competitors follow processes used by real Formula One teams, including Computer Aided Design (CAD), and wind and smoke tunnel testing.   • Regional IMechE Dinner 2018

    The Annual regional IMechE dinner was once again held at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield on the 20th April 2018. Based on the close collaboration between the local IET & IMechE, John Lawrence and I from the IET SYLN were once again invited as their guests for the evening. Since its inception, the dinner has been a huge success with around 200 guests attending through either regional Businesses or Academia sponsored tables. Keynote speakers at the dinner this year were the current IMechE president Carolyn Griffiths, the Master Cutler Kenneth Cooke and their present Regional chairman Alan Bratton. The Master of ceremonies for the evening was Denis Healy the IMechE Regional Business Development Manager. As a graduate, I wondered if I would even be able to enter the pavilion on my own seeing as most university buildings require swiping a student card to enter.   • London Calling!

    The 12th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation was held last week in the ExCeL Centre in London, UK.   The conference was the biggest ever with over 1500 delegates and over 40 exhibitors. As always the conference was a mix of invited talks, poster sessions, exhibition and social events, all of which contributed to a very successful event! I got the chance to sit in on some of the talks and look at some of the posters – there is lots of interesting research happening in the areas of antennas and propagation at the moment.   The IET was in attendance with the exhibition stand – the stand was busy every day and I loved talking to so many of the delegates throughout the week.   • Cambridge Sustainable Technology

    Cambridge Sustainable Technology Meetup is a group for people interested in the technology involved in sustainable development, e.g. renewable energy, electric vehicles or precision agriculture.   A lot of the emerging products in these areas-  whether it's electric bikes or smart meters - can be improved upon by individual engineers and make for great projects.     We had an appreciative audience in the Kelvin Lecture Theatre at Savoy Place for the April IET Central London Evening Lecture to be enlightened by Kevin Madeja of Snelling Business Systems on the AV systems that illuminate and entertain. The refurbishment of Savoy Place was a major undertaking and the results are superb.     Congradtulations to Diego Valencia Garcia to be PATW Toronto LN 2017-18 winner. Good luck to your next level competition in Ottawa in the summer. Congradtulations also go to John Morrison to be the runner-up.  It has been an issue in the last couple of years for Toronto LN as to who would organize the PATW. As the one who is determined to make sure that the event happens this year, I am happy to see that the 2017-18 Toronto PATW final was the outcome of a team work.   • 4 Ways The Media Industry Can Fight Piracy

    With piracy a major and growing problem for the media industry, how can we go about combatting it?   Revenues lost to piracy will reach nearly $52 billion by 2022, according to a report from digital TV research . And this just covers revenue lost on TV episodes and films, not other sectors such as sports or pay TV.    In its  report on trends in 2018 , digital platform security provider, Irdeto outlines the increasing threat that operators face from piracy.   According to Mark Mulready, Vice President Cybersecurity at Irdeto: “Live sports rights can be a key differentiator for pay TV operators and broadcasters, who pay large licensing fees to acquire the rights to broadcast such events in their regions.   "However, operators and broadcasters could experience subscriber churn and reduced advertising…
