Volunteers Wanted For STEM Week As Part Of The Scottish International Airshow

Are you interested in becoming involved in the first ever Scottish International Airshow STEM Week? This event is on from Monday 29 August until Friday 2nd September and is open to schools from across the west and central Scotland and the IET are hoping to host a Career Stand in the Careers Zone and we are looking for members who will engage with the pupils to discuss careers / options / routes into engineering and personal careers observations. What we are looking for is a call for volunteers to establish that we can provide stand cover and once we are confident that this can be done we would confirm the time slots, order the materials, pupils and teachers literature and stand dressing equipment, and…

We Are The "Most Operationally Excellent Network"

Congratulations to all of my colleagues on the TT LN executive as well as our local IET members and supporters for working as one team enabled us to be awarded the "Most Operationally Excellent Network" at the 2016 IET GVC. A Tour Of The World’s First And Brightest Hard X-ray Laser

On Wednesday June 22nd, IET NorCal members and guests had a fantastic tour of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Linac Coherent Light Source ( LCLS ). The group was given an initial 40 minute presentation by Dr Mike Dunne describing the history of SLAC and the introduction in 2009 of LCLS. The initial development of SLAC required some novel thinking and a significant leap in the physics of the day in order to make the accelerator a reality. This included the construction of a freeway bridge over the accelerator for the future I280! A view of SLAC from the air with a bridge waiting for a freeway to be built! Since its 2009 launch, LCLS has drawn researchers in a wide array of scientific fields from around the globe to explore the innermost workings and properties of common and exotic materials…

Aero Space Kinross Centre

Aero Space Kinross is a new venture planned to provide an educational and visitor centre with a focus on all aspects of aerospace located centrally in Scotland. ASK is intended to fill an educational gap in an entertaining way and is closely linked with the local community and local schools. The centre will be staffed by a young post-graduate crew who will enable access to the application of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) of flight, astronomy and space exploration. On 19 May 2016 the IET Healthcare Technologies TPN and the Telemedicine and eHealth section of the RSM held a fantastic joint one day seminar on the future of medicine. Appeal For More Female Engineers To Have Their Work Published

On National Women in Engineering Day 2016, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for more female engineers to capitalise on their knowledge and expertise by having their work published in its world-renowned publications and information services. The IET publishes a range of widely respected publications and information services for engineers and technicians, and is making the appeal due to the worryingly low number of female engineers contributing to its publications. For example, only 1% of the 800 editorial board members serving across the IET’s journal portfolio are female. Read more...

The IET in the National Media for National Women in Engineering Day

Naomi Climer appeard on Women’s Hour (she’s on 2:45 into the programme) this morning and she is also due on Sky News at 14:45 today. The subject of both interviews are National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) and Naomi’s placing in the Daily Telegraph’s Top 50 Women in Engineering list, published in today’s Daily Telegraph. Other IET members in the list include Faye Banks, our youngest female Fellow and Eleanor Stride, previous winner of the A F Harvey Prize. Congratulations to IET Scotland and the SEM Technical Group on winning the CC-UK award for Best Engagement with Under 40s or students. David Ritchie (Chair IET Scotland) left receiving the certificate from Davy Thielens (Chair CC-UK) IET Scotland and the SEM Technical group scooped the CC-UK award at the Communities Volunteer Confernece 2016 for their 5 lecture, 4 venue and 1200 student engagement Christmas Lecture. How To Hack A Bank!

On Wednesday 8 June, London Central hosted David Cash and Julian Storr at Savoy Place, two internet security experts from NCC, to show us 'How to Hack a Bank'! The speakers navigated through multiple sources of information available in the public domain, together with the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), to highlight how easy it is to gather personal information using means available to everyone on the internet. We were given real life examples of Physical Device Planting and other methods such as Phishing, attacks on External Infrastructure and Malware execution, which can be used to gain access on the system of a bank, government department and others organisations. Women in Automotive Engineering - National Women in Engineering Day

Thursday 23rd June is National Women in Engineering Day so the IET Automotive and Road Transport Systems Network are taking a look at some of the inspiring women of the automotive industry. Claudia Parsons (15 August 1900 – 5 June 1998) was a pioneering engineer, intrepid traveller, and author. She was one of the very first women in England to graduate in engineering and later became the first woman to ‘circumnavigate the globe by car. In 1919 Claudia found out from the newly formed Women’s Engineering Society that Diploma courses in Engineering were being introduced at Loughborough Technical College (now Loughborough University). She applied and was accepted, one of only three women engineering students in the whole college. Claudia Parsons graduated from Loughborough with a Diploma in Automobile…

Women In Automotive Engineering - National Women In Engineering Day

Thursday 23rd June is National Women in Engineering Day so the IET Automotive and Road Transport Systems Network are taking a look at some of the inspiring women of the automotive industry. Dorothée Aurélie Marianne Pullinger, MBE (13 January 1894 – 28 January 1986) was a pioneering automobile engineer and businesswoman. In 1910, she began work as a draftsperson at the Paisley works of Scottish automobile firm of Arrol-Johnston, the oldest and largest Scottish car manufacturer, where she trained under her father, a well-known car designer and Managing Director. Pullinger stayed at Arrol-Johnston until WW1 when production changed from cars to airplanes. Pullinger was then appointed female supervisor in charge of 7000 female war workers of the very large munitions facility operated by Vickers…
