  • Let me introduce myself

    My name is Natalia D’Lima and I am the new Community Manager for the RF and Microwaves TPN. I am new to the IET, based in the Stevenage office. I’ll let you know now that I’m not an engineer; I have come from a project management background, most recently at a market research agency in Hertfordshire. Over the past few weeks, I have been immersing myself in the IET; as a large company with lots of different strands, there is a lot to learn! As Community Manager, I will also looking after the Humber and North , West and South Yorkshire local networks, the Antennas and Propagation and Electromagnetics technical networks and a couple of newer ones as well: Cyber Security and Internet of Things.   • Globalising Tier 2 Roles ; Or Not.

    Most modern day cyber roles are globalised. However, if you function in a Tier 2 division and try to globalise its processes then you are likely to fail. Similarly, localising those Tier 2 cyber roles will also introduce a ceiling. Instead, it is recommended to ‘enterprise’ the processes of a Tier 2 function. This introduces accountability, ownership without the need to intentionally introduce compromise. For example, you might be an out of towner and not able to grasp the regional enterprise required within a role so try to accommodate that by introducing selective note taking during one to ones or disregarding meeting minutes as the feedback reflects real-time actualities instead of matching any incorrect perceptions being held.     The   Mediterranean Conference on Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Energy Conversion   belongs to a series of Conferences that have established a major energy platform in the region.     This week I attended my first Antennas event – LAPC 16, in Loughborough. The organisers did a great job with putting on the conference; t he event was well attended and everyone agreed that it was another successful year. On a personal note, it was a great chance for me to listen to the speakers and meet many of the network’s committee members.   On the day…   There was a lot on offer; the photos show some of the sponsors that were there, as well as a couple of the posters that were presented.   • Scoping Event Round Up

    On the 28th September 2016, we held our inaugural event at Savoy Place, the IET's London HQ. Around 40 members and non-members alike joined us for an evening of networking and contributing their ideas and experience to shaping the newly formed Technical and Professional Network (TPN). The event was kicked off with a short introduction by Philip Derbyshire (IBM) on the general remit of TPNs, the work done so far in setting up the IoT TPN and the outputs we were hoping to gain from the evening. This was followed by two talks from Alex Casson (University of Manchester) and Jon Ratcliffe (O2) on the work they do within the Healthcare Technology TPN and Multimedia Communications TPN respectively.   • Could Tiny Microbubbles Filled With Drugs Help In The Fight Against Cancer?

    The treatment of cancer hasn’t really changed over the past 50 years. We’ve seen improvements in surgical procedures as well as radiation therapy and the types of drugs used but generally cancer is still treated by surgery, radiation and drugs. If we fast forward 50 years, will we see any significant changes in these methods?   At the Engineering Festival back in October 2016 Professor Eleanor Stride gave a fascinating insight into science of microbubbles and how they are transforming ultrasound imaging and drug delivery.   It was interesting to learn the challenges in transporting drugs around the body and that only a tiny amount of chemotherapy drugs actually make it to a tumour with the rest of the drug affecting healthy tissue and subsequently causing the uncomfortable side effects that…

  • Assistance For Treasurer

    We are looking for someone to volunteer a little of their time to provide assistance to the Sussex Local Network Treasurer, perhaps with a view to taking over the role in the future if necessary.   The Sussex LN Treasurer does not handle any cash (we don’t have our own bank account) but ensures that various payment are made by the IET from their ‘bank’.   The Treasurer’s responsibilities are mainly as follows: Set Sussex LN budget for the year (September to July). Arrange with the IET for the funding of any special events that we decide to hold. Approve supplier invoices and ensure that they are paid by the IET. Approve expense claims from members and speakers and ensure that they are paid by the IET. Monitor and report on donated facilities and services. Record and report on capital assets…

  • CPD Advisor Volunteers Required

    As you will be aware from January 2017, If you are a member of the IET then you may be chosen to have your previous year's CPD reviewed by the IET .   We already have a team of CPD Advisors who have been active during the Voluntary phase of CPD monitoring who support this review activity, but we are now looking to recruit additional volunteers for the 2017 review period (which will review members' 2016 records).   CPD Advisors review individual members’ CPD records and assess whether they are demonstrating compliance with the IET’s requirements. They are also able to provide constructive feedback to the member on areas for improvement as appropriate.   • Rubik's Cube Record Broken Using ... An Aurix Chip!

    A whistle-stop visit to Electronica in Munich wasn't complete without seeing the record breaking Rubik's cube machine. For technical engineers this uses Infineon's Aurix chip (similar to the one used in driver assistance systems)mounted on an Arduino-style ShieldBuddy TC275 board from Hitex and programmed using a modified Arduino IDE.  For non-technical people this is a pretty cool piece of technology with a fun out of context use on show at the Infineon stand which was heaving - you could barely get through the exhibition hall door for people watching!     On 2nd November over 60 people gathered at IET London: Savoy Place to learn more about the Crossrail Learning Legacy. The Crossrail Learning Legacy programme aims to share the lessons from delivering Crossrail to raise the bar in industry and showcase UK plc through publishing insight and good practice.  This event aims to share the learnings of the Crossrail Programme Controls Team which set out to develop a world-class controls function which, through robust reporting and sound programme management protocols, would support the Crossrail programme to deliver the works safely and to time, specification and cost.     Well, what a great event we had on Tuesday, 8th November at Savoy Place.   The room was full to capacity and delegates heard from a number of experts focusing on different areas in industry and academia. Sean Owen from Cloudera gave the opening Keynote address which covered a diverse number of areas, including cost optimisation, reduced capital expenditure, maximising the value and longevity of existing assets, agility and resilience to market conditions and more globalised operations .  His talk concluded with a case study on a technology company that partners with utility providers to help consumers better understand their energy use.
