IET Faraday Challenge Singapore 2015

The inaugural launch of the Singapore Faraday Challenge Day took place between the 12th and 15th December 2015 and was a resounding success. The challenge was Mission to Mars . Singapore did it a little differently by targeting Singapore self-help organisations and the general public in order to increase awareness of the programmes and to let more people benefit from the challenge.   The challenge started with an ice breaking Bingo session led by volunteer Huang Lingxi, generating much excitement among the participants as they networked in the group, making new friends and finding out about themselves.   The event was made as real life as possible. Thoughts after attending the Project Controls 2016 - Delivering Smart Cities Event - IET, Savoy House, London

The event went well and I left with some interesting thoughts. It is really refreshing to witness the start of what I believe will be a paradigm shift in many aspects of everyday life. The move from purchase of the asset to purchase of the use was very interesting an I do feel that the benefits of this direction is now starting to reach technology facilitators and system integrators. This is key. If this model is to gain traction and not fail or fall short due to development within silos then a system integration approach is essential. Smart Cities are not just about eco-driven buildings and smart metering for energy albeit that these are very important. A total of fifteen (15) agenda items were discussed during the CCAP meeting in Singapore. During the meeting members present obtained updates and discussed among others about CRC, finance, matters arising from each Local Networks, regional PATW 2016, Global CVC 2016 as well as the CCAP Strategy . The meeting chaired by Dr Karla Smith, from New Zealand. A call for papers has been issued for the event Telecommunications in the Aftermath of WW1: Civilian and Military Perspectives The First World War was the first multinational conflict which engaged substantially with electrical communication. It saw extensive use of telephony on the battlefield as well as significant early technological developments in and military use of wireless systems; it is now well recognized that the War had a deep impact on the technology and practice of telecommunications. However, beyond the broadest contours, much remains to be understood about the complex and multifaceted nature of that impact as well as the evolution of telecommunications  between the wars. Diamond Light Source

Professor Andrew Harrison from the Diamond Light Source , gave an excellent IET Cambridge Network Prestige Lecture at Churchill College on Thursday 25/2/16.  Andrew's interesting and informative talk covered both the Diamond facility and the use of the synchrotron for research and other applications.  The talk, which was organsied by the IET, IoP and the I Mech E, attracted 200 attendees who participated in an active Q&A session.  Thanks go to Andrew for his talk.

February News

At the end of January, we were fortunate enough to have Arup sponsor a Present Around the World information session at Loyola Marymount University where we were able to give advice and guidance to potential competitors for our event on the 26th March. Young Professionals visit Fane Valley Feeds

With an annual production capacity in excess of 300,000 tonnes Fane Valley Feeds is one of the largest feed manufacturers in Northern Ireland and on the afternoon of the 18 th November 2015 the local IET Young Professionals made a visit to their Bankmore mill in Omagh. Fane Valleys history in Omagh stems from their purchase of the old Scots Feeds mill located in the centre of the town. Our tour guide, ex Production Director William McAusland, picked up the story of how this mill was no longer fit for purpose and Fane Valley made the decision to invest £18 million building what is their current mill. This background proved a perfect recipe for a brilliant tour, as having been responsible for leading the process of designing the mill William gave an excellent insight into its construction. In…

Andor Technology Ltd (now a part of Oxford Instruments) was setup in 1989 out of Queen's University Belfast and operates at the high-value end of the global scientific digital camera market. Employing over 400 people in 16 offices worldwide, it distributes its products to 10,000 customers in 55 countries. On the afternoon of 11 th November 2015 the IET Young Professionals made a visit to its facility in West Belfast. Joint Institutions Lecture 2016 - High Speed Rail, led by ICE

This presentation will explore the successful promotion and delivery of high speed rail projects, and lessons learnt for the current HS2 project, which will be Europe's largest construction project. The main speaker will be Colin Stewart, Global Rail Leader at Arup. Colin was Technical Director for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (HS1), and has been involved in HS2 since its inception in 2009. In addition, he has been involved in numerous High Speed Rail projects worldwide over the past 20 years, including Holland, China, California, Texas, Malaysia, and Sweden.
